Camel cigarette maker Reynolds American Inc is snuffing out smoking in its offices and buildings.
The nations second-biggest tobacco company informed employees Wednesday that beginning next year, the use of traditional cigarettes, cigars or pipes will no longer be permitted at employee desks or offices, conference rooms, hallways and elevators. Lighting up already is prohibited on factory floors and in cafeterias and fitness centers.
The no-smoking policy will go into effect once Reynolds builds indoor smoking areas for those still wanting to light up indoors, spokesman David Howard said.
We believe its the right thing to do and the right time to do it because updating our tobacco use policies will better accommodate both non-smokers and smokers who work in and visit our facilities, Howard said. Were just better aligning our tobacco use policies with the realities of what youre seeing in society today.

They concede after all the lies, all the bribes and all the unnecessary deaths.
They knew but profit is all that matters to the 1%.
Years from now they'll concede on fracking and climate change

(14,400 posts)you can smoke pretty much anywhere in their buildings. They already banned the cafeteria because people could no longer stand the smell while they ate.
I haven't smelled a stink like the office space of RJR in decades.

It's funny (but not ha ha funny) how just one smoker can ruin an entire closed space for dozens of people.

(14,400 posts)I was a pack a day smoker along with both my parents until about 15 years ago.
When we cleaned the walls of the house the grime that came off was the most disgusting shade of yellow. I can only imagine how bad that house smelled to someone that didn't smoke.
I walked into the office space of RJR six months ago on a business trip and the smell hit me as soon as the front doors opened. Damned near every office and cube space had an ashtray, some so overfilled that it made my stomach churn.
They had the air system's working so hard my shirt was waving in the wind as they tried to recycle the air and pump it outside.

When I came to this city in 1964 I was a non-smoker. I was advised to smoke a Reynolds brand during job interviews in order to have a better chance at landing the job.
So I did.
I finally stopped smoking decades later.
As I look out the window I see the Reynolds building. It used to be the tallest building in the South.
We have come a long way.

(50,557 posts)From what I remember about the history of the South, Mr. RJ built that building so tall because he wanted to see everything the company owned from his office windows.
