It's dumb. Dr. Spencer went to the hospital at the first sign of real Ebola symptoms, a fever combined with queasiness. The mail slot in his building is not contaminated.

His whole apartment is likely clean. His girlfriend hasn't shown any signs of illness.

I think the postal service made it mandatory for workers to wear the gloves. The mask is just an extra precaution.
