Study predicts Kansas City Royals boost to midterm incumbents

“We find clear evidence that the successes and failures of the local college football team before Election Day significantly influence the electoral prospects of the incumbent party, suggesting that voters reward and punish incumbents for changes in their well-being unrelated to government performance,” the researchers wrote.

Smart politicians have long embraced sports teams in their communities as a way to connect with voters. Now there’s scientific proof that a win can help an incumbent keep their seat.

For Sen. Pat Roberts and Gov. Sam Brownback, each trailing their challenger by one point in the latest NBC News/Marist poll, a “Royals boost” could be decisive.

At a campaign stop on Monday, each wore a piece of Royals regalia at the podium, and each encouraged the home team and its fans.

“Now is no time to lose the faith,” Roberts told supporters after donning a Royals cap. “You know how they've done this with extreme victories.”
