People Think The Economy Is Rigged To Favor The Wealthy. People Think Republicans Will Fix This.

http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/dave-johnson/59275/polling-irony-people-think-economy-is-rigged-trust-the-gop-to-fix-it

Mainstream media are so evil. People are so stupid...

With the annual budget deficit down two-thirds from what it was when President Bush left it, people think it’s worse. This is from the October 13 Gallup poll: “The GOP’s lead on the federal budget deficit has also widened, to 20 points from 14 points in April, and is now higher than at any other time during Barack Obama’s presidency.”

That last one is not a poll of opinion, that’s a poll of people’s understanding of basic facts. The deficit is way, way, way, way down, but people think it’s up.

People See Bad Economy, Think Democrats Are “In Charge”

The Republican strategy of obstruction and sabotage was clear and effective.
•They obstructed every effort to help the economy. They filibustered almost everything in the Senate and refused to allow votes in the House.
•They did things that sabotaged the economy. They threatened to default on the debt, which by itself was costly to the economy. They forced austerity with budget cuts and the “sequester.” They shut down the government.
•They understood that a Democratic president means people think “Democrats” are “in charge’ of the economy. Therefore people will blame “Democrats” when the economy is bad.
•During the election they have campaigned saying that “the Obama economy” is bad because of “Obama’s policies.”

It isn’t as if the Democrats in the House and Senate haven’t been trying to help regular people. The Progressive Caucus’ People’s Budgets, for example, have been solidly pro-economy and pro-regular-American. Democrats in the Senate have lined up to support filibustered bill after filibustered bill: The American Jobs Act. Cuts in tax breaks and subsidies for oil companies. Efforts to maintain and modernize our infrastructure. Efforts to help people with terrible student loan burdens. Efforts to raise the national minimum wage.

Plus as other threads have shown today, the more educated you are, the more likely your leanings will be liberal.

Dumb repubs doing things that will only cause their children to be poor, uneducated, and republican.

If you are stupid enough to think republicans will fix it, I've got a six million dollar bridge for sale.

I'm not seeing that in the article.

What I believe has happened is that the electorate trusted Democrats to fix it, and after 6 years of Obama and things just getting even more skewed towards the 1% than ever, that trust has collapsed.

It's not like there wasn't plenty of opportunity:

- Democrats voted for TARP
- Obama has selected exclusively Wall Street types to run the Treasury
- Obama went-along-to-get-along with Federal Reserve appointments
- Zero bankers prosecuted. Zero. Six years. Stop, pause, let that sink in. Does anyone expect a single banker to be prosecuted in the next two years?
- No reinstatement of Glass-Steagal or imposition of any other effective enforcement when Democrats controlled both the executive and legislative branches. Clearly, Frank-Dodd is toothless.
- Zero political pushback to "quantitative easing"
- SEC and CFTC a running joke

Clearly, fixing this problem has not been a priority for the elites in the Democratic Party.

And that is something we need to fix.
