Fugitive Filmmaker Roman Polanski Evades Arrest in Poland as U.S. Renews Chase

LONDON — Roman Polanski has evaded a fresh bid by U.S. authorities to have him arrested with a view to extraditing him.

U.S. officials requested that the Polish government seize the director as he visited Poland to attend the opening of a Jewish museum in Warsaw. Polanski was questioned by prosecutors in Krakow today.

“Roman Polanski said he would comply with all requests made by prosecutors in this case and provided his address,” Poland’s justice ministry spokesman Mateusz Martyniuk told AFP.

“Prosecutors therefore decided not to arrest him in connection with a possible U.S. extradition request.”

A trial is in order, and there is no reason one should not be held, if he ends up in U.S. custody.

He gets no pass for being a filmmaker, even an outstanding filmmaker. If he is found guilty of statutory rape, then there is a penalty for that. He should not escape his day in court. Once he fled to escape prosecution, the statute of limitations no longer applies. He is a fugitive from justice. Only a trial can convict or find him not guilty.

He pleaded guilty, and then fled the country to avoid going to jail.

I suppose there could be another trial for a charge of "escape" or "evading justice" or whatever California law may provide for, though it's probably pointless now.

Then he should be returned to serve his sentence and be tried for fleeing the country to avoid serving it.

I have zero sympathy for the man. Zero.

However, if you want a crime that can truly destroy a person, sexul abuse can do it. They deserve to have ZERO statute of limitations.
