(Context: "Sen. Landrieu's remarks on race anger Republicans", AP)

- Ronald Reagan's "states' rights" speech. C'mon. Why why WHY give that speech in a no-name Mississippi town most notable for being the site of the murdered civil rights movement activists?

- The entire birther conspiracy B.S. nonsense. Even though birtherism is now largely perceived as the political equivalent of UFO's and Bigfoot, you can STILL spot birther jokes and subtle references to birtherism ("Kenyan" and such) on Free Republic and other right wing discussion sites.

- Newt Gingrich calling Obama a "food stamp president". (Totally not a dog-whistle appeal to those who associate welfare with "black person", right?)

- Michael Savage calling Obama an "affirmative action president".

- Glenn Beck accusing Obama of having "a deep-seeded hatred for white people."

- Dinesh D'Souza's conspiracy theory about Obama inheriting an anti-colonial attitude from his Kenyan father (in The Roots of Obama's Rage).

- The Rush Limbaugh Show, notorious for anti-Obama sleaze such as, "Halfrican-American", "Barack the Magic Negro", ebola as payback for slavery, and asserting that Michelle Obama wants Americans "to eat roots, berries, and tree bark" (which screams "third world" to Limbaugh's bigoted listeners). More recently, Limbaugh described some women (D) senator candidates distancing themselves from Obama as: "... here’s the first black president, Barack Hussein Obama, and none of these white women want him anywhere near their campaign."

Landrieu didn't insult the bigots for nothing. She insulted them by revealing their guilty conscience. I hope she never apologizes. If Republicans didn't make subtle (or not so subtle) appeals to bigotry, they'd lose lots of votes.
