Iowas Joni Ernst: Obamacare is bad because people should rely on churches for help
An Iowa Republican candidate for U.S. Senate perhaps revealed more than she meant to about why conservatives are still so resistant to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), President Barack Obamas health care initiative, also known as Obamacare.
In audio obtained by Iowa Public Radio, Senate hopeful Joni Ernst told a group of reporters that the reason Republicans oppose Obamacare is because the job of caring for the poor is simply not the purview of government. The poor, she said, should rely on churches and charitable organizations for help.
Were looking at Obamacare right now, Ernst said. Once we start with those benefits in January, how are we going to get people off of those? Its exponentially harder to remove people once theyve already been on those programs.
We have lost a reliance on not only our own families, but so much of what our churches and private organizations used to do, she went on. They used to have wonderful food pantries. They used to provide clothing for those that really needed it, but we have gotten away from that. Now were at a point where the government will just give away anything. We have to stop that.
Jonathan Chait at New York magazine wrote, Thats the fundamental belief that motivates most, if not all, the conservative opposition: Health care should be a privilege rather than a right. If you cant afford health insurance on your own, that is not the governments problem.

I hope Obama has his veto pen sharpened and the repubs in congress make regular asses out if themselves.
Since we can't just use this election to do what is right it looks like we are going to have to take a licking and then maybe we wake the fuck up and quit fighting among ourselves and replace the repukes we can.

When I hear that the repubs will get things done, I think those are things we don't want done. I'll take two more years of grid lock.

She has refused to sit down w newspaper editorial boards and answer policy questions.
DNC and Braley run ads that show her actual policy statements, but are being heavily out spent by Kochs and Rove's American Crossroads.
That being said, this race is not over yet. I am cautiously optimistic still.

(17,199 posts)State Sen. Joni Ernst, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Iowa, said that President Barack Obama had "become a dictator" and that he should be punished for his executive actions, even if that meant "impeachment."

"I do think that yes, he should face those repercussions, and whether that's removal from office, whether that's impeachment," Ernst said in response.

When a member of the press, Esquire blogger Charlie Pierce asked Ernst more in-depth questions on Ebola, she responded with how one would expect a conservative to respond; its not fact:
What should he have done about Ebola? One person in America has Ebola.
OK, youre the press, youre giving me your opinion, Ernst responded
Its not an opinion, only one person in America has it, he responded.
Her response is just as generic: Make sure that all of these agencies are coordinating together make sure he is sharing with the American people he cares about them, he cares about their safety.
Gee, why didnt President Obama think of that first? Well played, Joni. However, thanks to Republican-led budget cuts, that might not be as easy as Ernst might think. You cant hate bureaucracy and cut from it then expect it to work how you want it.
And you want to President to share with the American people? How about his address on October 18, when he dedicated his weekly address to the Ebola crisis and reassured the public that the United States will continue to help lead the global response in West Africa. Because if we want to protect Americans from Ebola here at home, we have to end it over there. Oh and how about the next week, on October 25, when he said that Patients can beat this disease. And we can beat this disease. But we have to stay vigilant. We have to work together at every levelfederal, state and local.
Obviously Joni Ernst a) doesnt read the news, b) just hates Obama and disregards facts, or c) is just really, really oblivious. Or she is all three. Im going with that. Republicans have no problem disregarding the facts and using their position to inject fear into the public to get the votes. This is true in Ernsts case.
This disregard of the facts is almost as hilarious as Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetzs brain-dead moment when he was confused as to why the Surgeon General wasnt handling the Ebola crisis (Hint: its because we dont have one).
Please, Iowa, do NOT elect this wacko to the Senate.
