Minnesota police have released hospital security video that they say shows a man who later died in police custody chasing and attacking nurses with a metal pole. Police in Maplewood said they still didn't know why Charles Emmett Logan, 68, of St. Paul died after being handcuffed following the attack Sunday.
One nurse suffered a collapsed lung, and another fractured her wrist, NBC station KARE of Minneapolis reported. Medical staff told police that Logan was suffering from paranoia, the station reported.
Police said in a statement that officers used a Taser stun gun on Logan when they found him three blocks from the hospital and, when that wasn't effective, wrestled him to the ground and put him in handcuffs. Almost immediately after the cuffs were locked, police said, Logan became unresponsive and later died. An autopsy was scheduled, police said.

(115,681 posts)to do with the incident. A man went nuts, attacked nurses seriously injuring at least 1, ran away, taser didn't work, got tackled by police and died.
Here is more on the story, in case you are interested. It sounds like something bad happened in him to cause this. I feel really sorry for the nurses, how scary and awful, and for him.

(16,864 posts)These things unfortunately happen to hospital staff sometimes when they're dealing with patients who have physical and/or mental problems. It's sad, but not that unusual. I have no idea why he died so soon. Maybe the stun gun was too strong for him or maybe the police were too rough with him. Then again, his paranoia could have been a symptom of a physical condition that was killing him, not necessarily a mental disorder. If the medical examiner is competent, the autopsy should answer these questions.

(5,514 posts)I don't know why they seem to be the first measure police take rather than a last resort.
I've dealt first-hand with people having episodes like this. Never done anything that would put their lives at risk - if I did I'd have lost my job. I think police need to be better trained to deal with people who may be mentally ill, assuming that was the case here.

That's the story.
