Seattle woman in famous wartime photo dies at 103

Fumiko Hayashida holds 13-month-old daughter Natalie, while waiting board a ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle on March 30, 1942. They were among 227 Japanese Americans forced into interment camps during World War II under Executive Order 9066.

1. Shame on the caption writer

The caption appears to have been written by editors at seattlepi.com who apparently are too uneducated to know the difference between internment and interment.

By the way, that is her daughter Natalie who is also shown in the later picture.

Internment was horrible. But, interment would have been worse.

1) Only Natalie is shown in both pictures.

2) I expressed some exasperation about a mistake in a newspaper article to a friend who is a professional writer. I knew she was a perfectionist about the documents she published, so I expected some agreement with my opinion. She expressed sympathy for newspaper writers and editors, however, given that they're under daily deadlines.

and the writers & editors are responsible for all that now.

There was a comment on some HuffPo article correcting some egregious error & lamenting the lack of editing. A person who identified herself as an editor replied saying (paraphrased): "Editors choose which mistakes should be fixed. The sentiment expressed is more important here than the grammar. You shouldn't correct something like that lest you look pedantic."

A different author, whose bio said she was an editor, responded to comments regarding her misspelling of "cherish" as "charish" (in the headline!), with the sarcastic comment: "It must be nice to be perfect. I guess you NEVER make any typos!"

No one ever misspells anything any more... it's all typos.

So I have no sympathy for editors if that is their attitude.

1) Only Natalie? Maybe you're looking at the wrong picture. The picture in the OP has two people in each and they are the same two people (mother Fumiko Hayashida and daughter Kayo Natalie Hayashida Ong.) Perhaps this will help your confusion:

2) No legitimate "professional writer" makes excuses for poor grammar. The lazy and uneducated hire professional writers to clean up their work. I'd fire your friend if this was an example of what she considered acceptable.

As did her whole family, including her 3 children who were all under 5 years of age during their internment.
