(17,218 posts)Loretta Lynch hearings likely to wait

Senate Democrats appear increasingly likely to punt confirmation proceedings for attorney general nominee Loretta Lynch into next year, a move that would appease Republicans who want the fight to wait until they hold the majority.
Senior Senate Democratic and White House aides say they are reluctant to provoke a process fight with the newly empowered Republicans. No final decision has been made, but several Democrats privately believe that there might not be enough time to confirm Lynch in the lame-duck session, anyway.
While Lynch has yet to be thoroughly vetted for the job, her nomination has not provoked a major outcry from Republicans, a sign she still stands a strong shot at being approved even in a GOP-led Senate unless she trips up during her confirmation hearings.
Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the Democrat who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee that will consider the nomination, is not making Lynchs confirmation his top priority in the remainder of the year. Instead, Leahy is pushing hard to enact the USA Freedom Act, a sweeping overhaul of domestic surveillance programs that proponents fear would die next year if it doesnt pass while Democrats control the Senate.
Added to the hurdles: The White House has yet to formally send over the papers associated with the Lynch nomination, meaning the bureaucratic work of considering the nomination has yet to begin in earnest, let alone the nominees own one-on-one meetings with senators.

(16,105 posts)They should look back on history and see how such policies have worked out in the past.
They're going to buckle and give Cruz and Co. everything they ask for.
I doubt we'll even see token resistance to anything.
Wave good bye to the entire social safety net.

(130,895 posts)while Dems are in the majority. Consequently the nomination will be brought up again, next session, next year, when Repugs are in the majority, and what's his name runs the place and determines what will be taken up, and when.
I suppose we'll start hearing WHY tomorrow.

(130,895 posts)Did they say why? I heard a while ago, on one of the shows, they have to deal with budget bill now. Maybe that's why?

(70,214 posts)I do no recall why. But it does seem like even the Dems-even with the delay are assuming she will be confirmed. I do not trust the Republicans for anything anymore. Simple as that.

(4,185 posts)Perhaps they are betting the republicans will act like republicans.
Lynch seems to be a smart and non controversial choice. So the confirmation is just waiting there as the first 'to do' of the new session.
And here are the republicans. Fresh off convincing America they can and are ready to govern.
And what do they do? Muck it all up by protesting the presidents choice and the country goes on without an AG and Washington's gridlock is only further rooted.
The democrats get to come out and say a big "we told ya so" and the republican after glow is crushed.
Just a theory.
