Senator Susan Collins sponsored the U.S. Capitol Grounds Memorial Tree in honor of 14-year-old Emmett Till, whose brutal murder in 1955 in Money, Mississippi for whistling at a white woman helped spark the civil rights movement. Till was buried at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois.
