Ten years ago, a troll was a grumpy guy covered in warts parked under a bridge. Today, a troll is someone who cruises the Internet wreaking havoc by striking up arguments and leaving mean-spirited messages in online comments and forums. These destructive rabble-rousers are downright nasty and websites and online communities struggle to keep them at bay.
But just how many trolls are there out there? A new study finds that theres likely more than one under every bridge.
Over 28 percent of Americans admit to being intentionally mean toward someone they didnt know on the Internet, according to a survey of 1,125 adults by YouGov.com. Some 23 percent have argued maliciously over an opinion with a stranger online. Twelve percent say they crossed the line so far that their comment was removed. Men are more likely to torment others online compared to women and Millenials are twice as likely to heckle compared to those age 55 and over.
