If you go to the page it says "hacked by Syrian Electronic Army" and shows some ISIS type emblem.

Global websites hacked by Syrian Electronic Army
Excerpt:
In an email from Gigya, seen by CNBC, the company confirmed that it had been the target of a hacking attempt. It said some calls to Gigya domains were redirected to the hackers' site or displayed a hacking message to end users.

So no, the NY Daily News was not hacked.
The "hack" consists of changing their ad content from the 'approved' ad to the 'hacked' popup in some cases, and some DNS hijacking in others. To call this a "hack" is giving way too much credit.

Pro-Caliphate guys like Al Qaeda, Al Nusra, ISIS etc. usually have a black flag.
