(34,648 posts)I like hot sauce on them.

(39,961 posts)Collards with potlicker and tabasco vinegar sauce (little whitish peppers in vinegar labeled as "sport peppers" but they are Tabascos because they have a sudden but non lasting burn)?
Please pass the bowl ... and by the time it has gotten back around, I'll need it a second time!

(9,126 posts)I make them a lot, because greens are healthy, right? But I make mine with a ham hock. And sometimes add bacon too I have never made them with a turkey wing, though I should try.

(50,566 posts)We are having a lot of them this year. Roasted veg soup, green beans & shallots, peas & mini onions in cream sauce, roasted brussel sprouts, salad. Their lightness will help balance out the stuffing and mashed potatoes.

(40,416 posts)Smothered in gravy, accompanied by dark meat, the absolute best of the bird. Yup, sweet potatoes are great, as long as stupid marshmallows aren't involved. Rutabaga is obligatory, also smothered in gravy.
For desert, mince meat pie, preferably from scratch like my mother made it. And, of course, pumpkin pie, smothered in real whipped cream.
Tongue in cheek rant follows:
(Fuck Dream Whip, or as most people call it, Nightmare Whip. It's like mayonnaise and Miracle Whip -- the latter is a miracle if one prefers it. One might surmise that the advertisements wish us to all be whipped into submission. By that standard one should know that Scientology is Religion Whip, which it is, and for the same reasons.)
Just having some fun on Thanksgiving.
Happy day to you all.
Enjoy your day, even if it includes Miracle Whip or Dream Whip or any other kind of whips, as long as it is mutually consensual. (And as long as it does not include Scientology.)

I have to make that every Thanksgiving for my love.

(34,136 posts)Or sautee them whole?

(8,352 posts)Yes, I cut them in half if small ones and in quarters if they are very large.

(115,691 posts)Today, since what's left of my family is out of town, I'll just be sharing a turkey leg with my cats. I'll also have some mashed potatoes and whatever else I can rustle up around here. And a glass or two of sauvignon blanc. It's nice not to have to look at that sweet potato glop for a change.

(34,136 posts)That tastes like a dessert rather than vegetables!
Since my husband and I made our own dinner we got to pick what we wanted instead of being polite about what the rest of the family might contribute. We had turkey with mushroom dressing, mushroom turkey gravy, green beans almandine, and baked sweet potatoes. We both like the sweet potatoes simple, with just some butter and salt, not all that other crap.
I made key lime pies, but gave one away and froze the other one since I used the egg whites left from the pies to make meringue cookies. Three batches of cookies - one with chocolate mint chips, one with chocolate peanut butter chips and one with chocolate caramel chips. I used those new Nestles chips that have chocolate outer shells and peanut butter or caramel interior - they are GREAT and work really nice with the meringue cookies!

(23,664 posts)Grandma and I are by ourselves, spending thanksgiving in our RV at the beach. So we'll avoid all the political arguments this year.
But the booze has become a ginormous part of the day. Thanks to the discussions we used to have when we had 20-25 family members over.

(12,157 posts)You left out tamales. They grace a lot of tables around here at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's Tamale season-season's greetings!!!

(21,925 posts)with a little flour and maybe milk (I'm not sure how my dad prepared it, but it was good). Dumplings, cornbread, biscuits, stuffing, sweet potatoes, turkey, cranberry sauce, and pecan pie. My dad was from the south and went nuts preparing mountains of food for thanksgiving and inviting people over to share it.

A little taste of pumpkin pie is enough for me, but it's such a ridiculously easy pie to make and you can't screw it up, plus everybody in the family (except me) likes it.

(9,033 posts)formerly the signature dessert of the Montana Club in Helena MT, back in the days of the copper barons. MIL's grandmother got it from the chef who created it (nobody ever dared to ask how, or why, since it was a secret). The filling is a custard mixed with whipped cream mixed with merinque...and rum. Chill, sprinkle with nutmeg. To Die For, seriously.
I'm curious about anything that has rum in it!
Hope you had a great holiday.

(36,063 posts)I don't like the stress of putting it together and something in the kitchen always fails, usually plumbing...but this time it was the clock and timer on the oven...so it was all timed from the clock on the answering machine.

(23,156 posts)The turkey itself, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes (I make mine with a little cream cheese and boy, are they good!), sweet potatoes (made from real yams, not canned), peas. Oh, I just named my entire menu this year. I also have a bought apple pie I'm too full to slice, but I'll get to it tomorrow.

(51,076 posts)Throw the rest away as far as I'm concerned because I can be very happy with those three ingredients
Just got back home from a thanksgiving dinner with my wifes two brothers and sister and I must say it was an awesome time, excellent food. We're all senior citizens, three of us Vets

Thick sliced, light wheat bread, havarti cheese, lettuce, turkey, cranberry sauce, and slices of granny smith apples. My wonderful boyfriend bought all the ingredients yesterday and I CANNOT wait until tomorrow when I get to eat it.

(7,720 posts)I madea huge batch of bread/sage stuffing. I made enough to freeze a large casserole dish of stuffing. I like to reheat stuffing in a waffle iron. All kinds of crispy stuffing.

We don't usually have Thanksgiving dinner here, and I'm the only one who likes it anyway.
So, since no one I know makes it tastier than I can (Mom's old recipe), methinks I'll make up a batch, and try freezing it.
Thanks for the idea!

(7,720 posts)I did not eat stuffing or gravy. Now, they are my favorite Thanksgiving foods.
I have frozen stuffing in muffin tins. The result is a dozen crispy stuffing servings.

(10,715 posts)both are the best part of the meal. Turkey goes on a rack in a roasting pan, and the carrots and diced bell pepper roast underneath in the drippings, though beginning in just 1/2 inch of chicken broth. The the turkey is always good too - brined a day in advance, butterflied, and 3 hours or so at 450...

(39,961 posts)I love mashed potatoes and turkey gravy, but unless there is a heaping helping of celery inundated stuffing sitting next to both of them on the plate, it's a Thanksgiving failure. Oh, and green bean casserole. I can only remember one year, fourteen years ago when I did not have that on the table.

(61,695 posts)Yes, I love the golden brown sticky, salty goo at the bottom of the pan that gets scraped up in making gravy.
I also like pies (chocolate, pumpkin, cherry, etc.).
