Peter, Paul and Mary

"Fifty Years with Peter, Paul and Mary" is airing on PBS. Lots of tape not seen before. Family and friends talking about Mary's life, very touching. Catch it, it's very worth it.

Posting this in GD because, for so many of us, PPM have been a significant part of our awareness for much of our lives.

7. As good as they were, people forget they were a commercial creation, like the Monkees.

Manager Albert Grossman created Peter, Paul and Mary in 1961, after auditioning several singers in the New York folk scene, including Dave Van Ronk, who was rejected as too idiosyncratic and uncommercial. After rehearsing Yarrow, Stookey and Travers out of town in Boston and Miami, Grossman booked them into The Bitter End, a coffee house, nightclub and popular folk music venue in New York City's Greenwich Village.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone inspired to positive social action by the Monkees. PPM rose above any 'commercial creation' and elevated the caring that motivated each of them as individuals; they took took their gift and made it a repeating encouragement for millions.

14. That's a large stretch to call them a commercial creation

Just because a manager may have put them together. They were anti-commercial in practice.

...at a community college a couple of years ago. My husband looks like he could be Mr. Yarrow's twin brother (can't sing worth a damn, though, so the resemblance definitely ends there).

Little Johnny Papers and Puff had zip to do with pot. My ass it didn't. Saw Peter or Paul (whoever) in concert 6 years ago and he says with a straight face it had nothing to do with weed. BULLSHIT!

I started singing folk music when I was about 12 years old (while learning to play the guitar) and this was one of my favorites. It has such a great opening line.

.......my husband decided to take me out for a bite to eat at a jazz club called Ratso's on North Lincoln Ave (Chicago). As we walked up, I was surprised to see a sign that said something to the effect of "Mary Travers appearing tonight". He didn't know who Mary Travers was, but I did and I was totally psyched. When she first came on, she told us in the room in a raspy voice that was nothing like the one we all know that she was so sorry, she had laryngitis, but she would give it a go and see how things went.

And as she sang, her voice became stronger and mellow and wonderful. It was a thoroughly lovely evening that I remember most fondly all these years later. I am a smiling WillowTree. Thanks so much for bringing it to mind.

About ten years ago I met Peter Yarrow at a campaign event for a Democrat running for national office. I was a volunteer for the campaign, and I think it was a semi high dollar affair, but since I was working I didn't pay to attend so I couldn't say for sure. One lovely perk was that professional photos were taken of all attendees with Yarrow and the politician, and to my surprise and pleasure they included me in the photos. I still have it tucked away somewhere.

Any number of wonderful PP&M songs were sung that day.
