New Hampshire State Police arrested a teen driving at a speed of 127 mph around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The Special Enforcement Unit, which monitors aggressive driving behaviors from the air during high traffic and holiday periods, spotted the Subaru sedan traveling northbound on Interstate 93 at an extremely high velocity.
Trooper Craig Gagne, a tactical flight officer aboard a fixed wing Cessna airplane, notified troopers on the ground, who intercepted the vehicle around Northfield, NH.
The driver, Ryan Quinn, 19, of Newport, RI was charged with reckless driving and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. Sargent Sampson, patrol supervisor for Troop D, told Boston.com that Quinn did not appear to be under the influence at the time.
Quinn will appear in the Franklin District Court on January 13, 2015.

I had a '65 Mustang coupe that had been retrofitted with a 302, which was a bored-out version of the 289. It *was* squirrely as hell.

The bugs shape caused it to lift up at high speeds, reducing tire grip on the road. The only reason it didn't suffer the swing axle problems of the Corvair was it was underpowered.
The Microbus is pretty damn scary at 80 MPH too. When driving something as aerodynamic as a brick, a slight crosswind could give you quite the fright.

(50,557 posts)ALL rear-engine cars, no matter what they are, need more tire in the back than in the front. You can do it two ways: the Sports Car Way, which is to put wider tires on the back axle, or the VW Bug way, which involves putting more air in the back tires. (The air pressure on a Bug is 10 psi lower in the front tires than the rear.) VW, which has been aligned with Porsche for a long time, made sure to tell its customers to put more air in the rear, and they told tire shops to do this too. GM, however, didn't know this and that's why so many Corvair accidents happened.

(34,136 posts)NEVER went that fast again, even though I kept it under control and managed to pull over safely. It scared the piss out of me! And I had to wait for the tire to cool off enough to change it so all that speed didn't get me to my destination any faster.
Good thing I was stone cold sober, it was good weather, and I was wide awake. If I'd gone off the side of the road I would have ended up in the Green Swamp and the alligators might have gotten me before I could have gotten out.
Yeah, kids are dumb.

(2,484 posts)In all seriousness when I have gone that fast, it is in the middle of the desert where I can only harm myself. In the city is just nuts.

(36,745 posts)I really have to watch it with my Chevy Sonic, otherwise I am hitting 85-90 with it. On uncrowded freeways I have to set cruise control to keep it down.
127 mph, however, is a blatant disregard for safety and the kid deserves what is coming to him.
NutmegYankee
(16,199 posts)Usually the transmission is only geared for a max speed around 100. My 5 speed VW is @3000 RPM at 80 MPH.

(64,407 posts)for that one. But even then, that's just based on age and stupidity.*
*Disclaimer: I don't mean all Subie drivers are stupid. The age and brand scream Rex/STi, as Outback drivers tend to not drive like that. Not that all Rex/STi drivers are stupid, but if this one was piloting one, this one was.

(16,199 posts)I originally thought I'd go into the automotive industry as a mech engineer, but fate got me into the naval industry instead. None of my cars over the years have been fast. Had a 4 speed VW microbus (which I still miss), a Volvo 240 wagon 5 speed (which I also miss), and currently have a Jetta 5 speed.

(64,407 posts)Is I-93 some sacred stretch of asphalt that bears no speeding? Is 127 mph the new cornflake chicken? Is it because Subaru stands for so many things stereotyped liberal perhaps?

That thing was so powerful that I popped the windshield trim loose from the torque twisting the car (I also replaced about 5 left-side motor mounts for the same reason.)

(4,741 posts)On I-80W in PA, along the absolutely deserted stretch heading to Lock Haven. I'm not sure exactly how fast I was going since the speedo in my (engine-swapped) 240SX only went to 150.
No worries though, there were no other cars in sight and I was strapped in to my high-buck "ricer-bling" race seat bolted to a roll cage. It was essentially a race car, idiotic and technically illegal but oh so much fun..

(14,524 posts)... which it could easily peg and was still accelerating hard. I80 west of Lincoln, Neb. has some nice long stretches. The age of the muscle car had many models capable of that and more.

PCIntern
(25,544 posts)that when I was driving to Rochester NY where I went to college, my Triumph Herald 1200 would max out at 82 with the pedal to the floor and the wind behind me. I was 'tooling' along at this rate when a large car, either a Lincoln or Pontiac sped past me as though I were in reverse. I was so frightened that I couldn't see what make or model the car was because I was so stunned at being passed that fast going at that rate of speed.
And then
and THEN
a State Police Car almost literally flew past me and CAUGHT UP to the speeding car which pulled into a rest area when he saw the lights. I estimated the first car at 130-140. I have no idea how fast the policeman was driving. It was disorienting.
