What the hell is happening, Truthseekers? Twice recently grand juries have failed to indict white police officers who have killed unarmed black men. But lest you fear grand juries have lost the ability to issue an indictment, all is not lost. A Staten Island grand jury did issue an indictment in the Eric Garner case. Obviously not to death-dealing officer Daniel Pantaleo , but the the young black man who filed Eric Garner’s murder with his cellphone. Huffington Post has more:

On Wednesday, a Staten Island grand jury decided not to return an indictment for the police officer who put Eric Garner, an unarmed black man, in a chokehold shortly before his death. A different Staten Island grand jury was less sympathetic to Ramsey Orta, however, the man who filmed the entire incident.

In August, less than a month after filming the fatal July 17 encounter in which Daniel Pantaleo and other NYPD police officers confronted Garner for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes, a grand jury indicted Orta on weapons charges stemming from an arrest by undercover officers earlier that month.

Police alleged that Orta had slipped a .25 caliber handgun into a teenage accomplice’s waistband outside a New York hotel. Orta testified that the charges were falsely mounted by police in retaliation for his role in documenting Garner’s death, but the grand jury rejected his contention, charging him with single felony counts of third-degree criminal weapon possession and criminal firearm possession.

In Garner’s case, on the other hand, jurors determined there was not probable cause that Pantaleo had committed any crime. A medical examiner ruled Garner’s death homicide in part resulting from the chokehold, a restraining move banned by the NYPD in 1993.
So there you go – justice is served after all. I have no idea how black men can bear to live in this society anymore. It must be like Winston Smith, living in Oceania, knowing that he could be killed by the thought police at any time, for any reason. Again, how prescient that we are revisiting 1984 on the program. We received this letter from a listener who works in the tech sector:

Hi Mike,

I am avid nightly listener of your program via the TuneIn app. I have been listening for 2 years now and make every effort to listen each night. You hit everything on the head on all the topics your cover, religion, our corrupt politic system, the out of control non-regulatory obsessed corporatist and industrialists that run this country.

After hearing about the non-indictment decision of the NYC police officer involved in Eric Garner’s death…I truly became sick to my stomach and almost was brought to tears. As an African-American male, I am at a lost of why should I stay in this country. I have be married to my wonderful wife for 8 years and have 2 lovely children from my previous marriage. If I could leave this country I would. I can not believe that with a video tape showing everything, and the officer using a banned “choke-hold”, how did the grand jury decide not to charge the officer with “manslaughter at-least” and let the real jury-trial system decide his fate. I truly now feel like it is “open-season” on African-American males like myself. I work from home and when I decide to venture out to go to a coffee shop or get something to eat, I am scared to death that I don’t get stopped by the police for anything….this is truly a sad state of affairs.
I always have to remind myself that we live the most violent country in the history of the world…..dating back to the founding, the enslavement of my ancestors, the total genocide of the “natives’ and the violent and heart-breaking way their land was stolen, and everything else our country has done in wars, foreign policy, invasions of sovereign countries, building bases in over 100 countries, etc. To make matters worse, I found this story just today indicating the “House” passed a $577-Billion Dollar defense bill which included blocking requested spending cuts from the Dept of Defense itself…..here is a link……this and our history just speaks of VIOLENCE!!!!
So, as an African-American male, I have come to the conclusion that this is really no place for an African-American male…and I hope I things somehow get better but I don’t see any way that they can.

I am a transplant from Philadelphia who has lived in Louisiana for the last 6 years. I don’t understand why the state hates Common Core, which is designed to increase academic standards so our children in 5-20 years will have shot at competing with foreign students who are kicking our butts. This state is so backwards that it is frightening on so many levels. Mike please keep doing what you do and I will keep listening…

We share this feeling. Our violent culture demands a fresh supply of “boogeymen,” or as the Bush Crime Family called them – evildoers. When we tire of one group, we turn our mistrust, fear, and hatred onto another. Blacks throughout American history, Japanese during WWII, Irish immigrants during the potato famine, foreign terrorists, women, Hispanic immigrants, Native Americans, and so it goes. The wheel keeps on turning and the groups are recycled – so easily interchanged.

We will continue the discussion tonight, and of course, will continue reading 1984. So very relevant, still today.
