Daniel Pantaleo, the NYPD officer who placed Eric Garner in a fatal chokehold last July, is a "model" police officer whom the public does not know enough about, the head of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association said today.
He is the model of what we want a police officer to be, P.B.A. president Pat Lynch said of Pantaleo. Whats also been lost is the character of police officer Daniel Pantaleo. Whats not being told is what kind of man and what kind of person and what kind of professional he is.
"He is a resident of this great city. He lives on Staten Island. He lives in those neighborhoods. Hes college educated, here in this city. Hes a mature, mature police officer whos motivated by serving the community. He literally, literally, is an Eagle Scout, said Lynch, adding that the maneuver Pantaleo used on Garner was a textbook takedown.

(17,199 posts)(if this is a model police officer, what does it say about the entire police force?)
Well, it seems the grand jury agreed he's a model police officer.

People of color especially. But, if this is the standard of law enforcement, then we should all be frightened, because it won't be long until they see us all as targets.
And we should all be very, very angry. OF course, that might lead to us being seen as threats and killed.

(10,650 posts)And that is exactly the problem! They want cops to be inhumane thugs who will choke a (black) man to death without a qualm.
That isn't what any decent person wants a cop to be.

Nah, race was not a factor in the Eric Garner incident.

That's some seriously deranged shit, REGARDLESS of the justification. Given the complete LACK of justification here, that's ESPECIALLY fucked up.

The president of the NYPDs largest police union said Thursday that the officer who put Eric Garner into a fatal chokehold is an Eagle Scout who shouldnt be blamed for the death.
Pat Lynch, president of the Patrolmens Benevolent Association, did fault one person for the death: Eric Garner.
We believe Mr. Garner made a choice that day to resist arrest, Lynch told reporters during a press conference Thursday, according to NBC New York.
-snip-
Pantaleo, Lynch said, is literally, literally an Eagle Scout, and I think that story isnt being told. That a New York City police officer went out and did a difficult job, a job where theres no script, and sometimes with that, a tragedy comes.

(39,215 posts)is an expert in martial arts saw it. The chokehold that the cop was using is a part of Jujitsu and is very deadly. Will used his own body to show me what they do and the known damage that will occur when it is applied. Not only was the hold preventing the victim from breathing it was also shutting blood and oxygen from getting to the brain. Because the victim had diabetes and asthma it was even worse. Stopping the blood to the brain increased to problems with diabetes and stopping his breathing increased the effect of the asthma.
Will then walked out into the kitchen and one of Ed's guests said exactly the same thing. Those cops murdered the victim. I suspect there was no one on the GJ that understood martial arts.
What I want to see happen regarding reform is:
1. All police should be given a independent psychiatric exam every year and after every incident.
2. At the time of hiring each applicant should have a background check and this program should be made nationwide so that it cannot be hidden by moving to another state.
3. The GJ system should be abolished in favor of a jury trial when there is an incident. We got this system from England many many years ago and they an all of their colonies have abandon it because it does not work. In a jury trial both sides are presented and can be cross examined.
4. All the military equipment must be taken away. This is the USA - we are not an occupied country.
5. The Federal Department of Justice should be given more power to oversee police actions.
6. Cameras may help but what would really help is to protect the right of citizens to take videos of police action when they can without retaliation.

Speaking of that chokehold, you're not going to want to miss Fox News' Sean Hannity beginning his analysis of the move with "as a martial arts student"...
see video: http://www.vox.com/xpress/2014/12/5/7339327/jon-stewart-sean-hannity

(39,215 posts)and he was also fully aware that it is a lethal hold.
I just thought it was funny that Sean Hannity claimed it wasn't a chokehold, Sean Hannity claiming to be a student of martial arts.
Your grandson could teach Hannity a thing or two I'm sure.

(21,925 posts)This is the front page of their website. I hope the city runs even shorter of cash to pay police benefits if the Garner family brings and wins a civil suit for wrongful death.
The words "moral obligation" are an attempt to throw the mayor's words back in his face. On taking office, DeBlasio proceeded to settle a case with the "Central Park Five", a group of five black juvenile teens falsely accused of rape and who served full prison sentences before their convictions were overturned. II seems the police coerced admissions of guilt by the teens and didn't allow their parents or guardians to attend their interrogations. The police used various ruses, including telling the main suspect they had found his fingerprints on the victim's clothes. During a new trial, they were cleared by DNA evidence and by the fact the real rapist confessed.
So mayor DeBlasio described the fact he had to settle the case brought by the juveniles, considering it New York's "moral obligation". Now, this disgusting Patrolman's Malevolent Association is mocking DeBlasio's words, criticizing him for settling the case in which the police bore responsibility for falsely sending five black kids to prison. The police cost the city $41 million in the settlement.
This is the police culture as represented by the Patrolman's Malevolent Association, the crap, the filth, the excrement in which guys like Pantaleo bathe.

Can you imagine if Giuliani were still mayor.
