(25,816 posts)The "I can't breathe" quote is symbolic of so much more.
Our whole society can't breathe because of so many issues: racism, sexism, and economic oppression.

(34,648 posts)Sometimes it's hard not livin in the lower 48. If I still lived in Los Angeles I'd probably head out to Leimert Park like I used too. I feel bad that it's so hard to get back and forth and I hate flying.
The Struggle continues.

(53,339 posts)I remember Leimert Park as where a couple of the Justice for Trayvon marches either started or ended. We had 3 DUers at one of the marches.
The struggle continues.

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]I'm in my mid-60s, female, and white. This afternoon, I was on a public sidewalk in a quiet city neighborhood, talking with a neighbor & good friend who happens to be a black male in his late 20s.
A beat-up old car slowed way down as it approached and the white male driver lowered the passenger window. At first I thought he must want directions or something, but he leaned over and shouted, "I should have brought my 9-millimeter!"
This is a daily reality for so many, potentially for every black person of any age, and it's WRONG.
When I read the OP here this evening, I cried. The hate has to stop and I'm deeply grateful for the many thousands who marched against bigotry and violence today.
Cha
(297,655 posts)think when a stranger rolls a window down.. asking for directions.
I would have been in shock and lashed out.. whatever did your friend say?
I am so grateful for all the thousands of protesters, too, silverweb.. I wish I could be one of them.
silverweb
(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]My friend just looked sadly at me and asked if I was okay. The horrified shock must have shown plainly on my face.
He then changed the subject as if nothing had happened, but we talked a little later on about what he and others encounter just getting around different parts of the city.
While I'm not overly fond of our mayor, he did make a pretty passionate statement in the wake of the latest gross miscarriage of justice. Basically, he said that Sacramento will not tolerate the kinds profiling, bigotry, and police violence that happen in other cities. Our police really are mellow and helpful overall, and I'm grateful for that, too.
Cha
(297,655 posts)it was.
Wow, your mayor sounds like he is really standing up for the injustice of the non indictment on Eric Garner.. Glad your police there in Sacramento are what the police are suppose to be. Ours here on Kauai are of that calibre too.

(13,390 posts)I'm noticing that some of the affirmative statements he made can only make sense in the form of a question.
For example...
It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important. Martin Luther King, Jr. ?????????????
One question he did ask is more relevant now than ever. Despite educational efforts, so many white people still believe that blacks are unreasonably and extremely angry (despite the generous efforts on the part of white people), or particularly prone to violence. There seems to be an ongoing effort, even among some liberals I know, to use MLK quotes to denounce the violence we have seen in STL.
"Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies - or else?" MLK Jr.
It's sad to see that many of his the most discouraging observations still apply.
"History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people." Martin Luther King, Jr.
Right now, it is heartbreaking to read his "I Have A Dream" speech.
