Brooklyn District Attorney To Impanel Grand Jury in Akai Gurley Case

The Brooklyn District Attorney said Friday he plans to impanel a grand jury to consider charges in the Nov. 20 shooting death of an unarmed black man at the hands of a rookie New York City police officer.
District Attorney Ken Thompson ’s civil-rights unit had been investigating the fatal shooting of Akai Gurley, 28 years old, along with the New York Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau.
Probationary Officer Peter Liang ’s gun fired accidentally, officials have said, striking Mr. Gurley in the chest in a Brooklyn housing project’s darkened stairwell.
The decision comes amid protests across the country this week after a Staten Island grand jury Wednesday declined to indict a police officer in the chokehold-related death of Eric Garner.
