How would you make MSNBC a really powerful channel like Fox is?

I'm all about getting rid of the prison stuff, that's a given.

How about 30 minutes of the last five days of best interviews from Rachel, Chris Hayes, Lawrence, heck even interviews with the blond wife of some arrogant something or other?

Yes, get rid of Andrea, get rid of people that bow to Joe morning Joke.....get rid of morning joke.

Three hours in the morning, between 6 and 9 am, spend then reviewing all networks, how they covered the previous day.

In short, make MSNBC a news channel about how news is reported on all other channels...

Then let Rachel run the news focus for MSNBC, for the next 24 hours. Rachel should have the 6 to 9 am, Joe should be in prison, the rest will fall into line with those two things being a real time cable network.

Bottom line: get rid of Joe, put Joe in prison for what he has said on the air, and for his background and intern he killed, put Rachel in charge. recipe for success for years to come.

That said, your suggestions are interesting, and I'd love to see Rachel in charge.

do. Faux News, to me, is a right-wing, opinion (news) network.

FOX and CNN ratings-wise, often. It is cheap, nearly free, to produce.

I think in order for the MSNBC franchise to be free of corporate influence, it would have to become an independent entity. The only way that could happen is if some stinking rich billionaire x a zillion bought the outlet. But then it wouldn't be a "free" media outlet--it would be subject to the whims of the billionaire that bought the outfit.

I don't think I would want to spend three hours in the morning watching one station "critique" other news stations--that would bore me to tears.

What I would like to see is a three hour show of "affiliate news." I think this could be a winner, and cheap to produce, too. All the affiliates send in their top stories--that parade in Dubuque, that fire in Fresno, that kidnapping in Kankakee, that robbery in Rotuna....and we watch the "local news" from around the country for three hours. I would find that riveting. Of course, there'd have to be an editor to pick out the best assortment of stories from all the regions of the country, put them in order, a production assistant to time them out so the commercials fit in, and maybe a presenter to introduce the stories, but it would be as cheap as a re-tread of a "Caught on Camera" or a Dateline re-hash and it could be done the evening before, ready to roll in the morning.

I think it would be a ratings winner, myself.

Right now in some areas MSNBC is not included in the "economy" cable package. FOX is. CNN is. HLN is. All the ignorance of the "new" discovery channel and learning channel are. But not MSNBC.

MSNBC is not meant to be viewed by a wide audience. Joe in the morning is crap that keeps morning MSNBC viewers ignorant of what's really going on. There are no late Friday news broadcasts by design - no one to comment on the late Friday news dumps. The prison shows keep viewers afraid of "them". (In an us vs them scenario)

MSNBC had a smaller viewership BY DESIGN. It can have liberal hosts so that the right can claim liberal bias and use snippets to "prove" the lie but TPTB don't really want MSNBC to have any significant market share.

I think documentary into prison life is important.

As far as ratings the show routinely beats Fox in the 25-54 demo. Aside from that, I believe news should be in the business of reporting the news rather than selling the news but if it comes to ratings, Lockup helps MSNBC more than it hurts.
