A family of six escaped safely from a fire early Thursday in southern Union County after being alerted by their dog, fire officials said.

The dog died in the blaze, however.

The fire was reported shortly before 12:30 a.m. at a mobile home on Clarksville Campground Road, about 5 miles south of Monroe. Firefighters found the home in flames when they arrived, and it took them about an hour to bring the blaze under control.
