Where Is the Media on TPP?

http://www.aflcio.org/Blog/Political-Action-Legislation/Where-Is-the-Media-on-TPP

12/10/2014 Kenneth Quinnell

Over at Campaign for America's Future, Dave Johnson takes a look at the secret negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a potentially very dangerous piece of legislation that could have devastating effects on working families. He notes that corporate-owned media is engaging in almost a total blackout on the story, failing once again to represent the people and allowing extreme corporate interests the freedom to run roughshod over workers in the United States and abroad.

Johnson says:

The secret TPP negotiations resumed this week, this time in Washington. TPP is a massive agreement that sets up new rules for over 40 percent of the global economy. It will have profound effects on our jobs, our standard of living now and in the future and our ability to make a living as a country. Oddly, though, as of Monday morning you have to read about it in Japan Times because few-to-no U.S. media outlets are covering it.

In spite of the lack of American media coverage of this tremendously important agreement, representatives of labor, environmental, family farm, consumer, Internet freedom, public health, faith, human rights and community organizations held a rally Monday outside the office of the U.S. Trade Representative. These organizations represent “stakeholders” from all countries that are denied a seat at the TPP negotiating table.

Johnson includes a lot more about the negotiations and the media blackout. Read the full article: http://ourfuture.org/20141208/trans-pacific-trade-talks-resume-with-almost-no-media-coverage

They don't see what the big deal is because "free trade" is such an article of faith with them and the pundits and pols that it's not so much a political issue as it is a law of nature.

To them:

Organized labor = "special interest"

Corporate lobbying = Status quo maintaining the "free market"

much mention of it is on the Ed Show. He rails about it on a regular basis, he's a working-folk kind of newsguy. He talks about it while his cohorts on the MSNBC go after other topics, touch on it once in a while... if something happens about it. Other than that, crickets.
