Turning a blind eye to torture and atrocities is as old as the USA.

You think General Sherman was ever tried for his torture, rape, and pillage campaign against civilians during the Civil War? Fuck no, he's a hero because he was on the "patriotic side".

All those Japanese prison guards who killed, tortured, and did medical experiments on American troops? Forgiven! Once we needed the Japanese in the fight against Communism. They now were on the "patriotic side".

Wernher von Braun and his use of concentration camp labor? Brushed aside! He was now a patriot in the Space Race.

Turning a blind eye to atrocities is something this country has always done or justified as long as the people doing it are aligned in our fights.

The CIA? Patriots in the "war on terror".

No different than Sherman, Japanese, German, etc.

Not sure why people are suddenly so shocked by the torture report and the subsequent justification by the government though.

is as old as the hills.

Today's Repubs may support torture, but Democrats don't, and neither does most of humanity, so we're in the majority.
