Dick Cheney is a pussy.

And he is the worst kind of pussy:

The kind who talks tough but has never put himself in danger, only using his position of power to put others there.

The kind who never takes a risk except those that better himself personally.

The kind who never accepts accountability when things go wrong but instead throws his friends under the bus.

He is a pussy who sees the military as the solution to every problem, who got rich through war profiteering, and who should have served himself in the Vietnam War, but instead what did he do? He ran and hid to the Midwestern bastion of Liberalism -- Madison, WI -- to work on a doctoral degree he never actually received. No matter. Big pussy Cheney collected plenty of deferments, and that was all he was really working on.

So, tomorrow the pussy is going on MTP and Todd will no doubt grovel to him like a Bieber fangirl. Once, just once, I would love to see the pussy face really solid and thorough interrogation by a principled journalist. I'm not holding my breath, though.

If someone offered a rational and sincere reason to its consistent use, it's quite possible that dialog may take place. Dec 2014

Here is an interesting read:

http://anthrocentric.tumblr.com/post/81621685922/pussy-is-not-short-for-pusillanimous

1. It doesn’t make sense grammatically. Pusillanimous is an adjective — a describing word — not a noun. In the same way you can’t say “Don’t be a quiet” or “Don’t be a small” or “Don’t be a green” or “Don’t be a spicy”, you can’t say “Don’t be a pusillanimous.” You can’t tell people not to be a/an adjective.

~~~~~~~
TL;DR? Pussy is not short for pusillanimous. Going back through the research, the word is closely related to women, women’s genitalia, and weak, effeminate men. The use of the word to mean “coward” is offensive to both genders — somewhat more to women than to men — and if you have an ounce of maturity you will stop using it that way.
Nothing would be better than for the "Dick Cheney is a pussy" meme to spread at a viral pace.
On Sat Dec 13, 2014, 11:00 AM an alert was sent on the following post:
Dick Cheney is a pussy.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025955118
REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
There are plenty of other words to express "cowardice", using a profane term for lady parts to express that idea is highly inappropriate for DU, not to mention shows sexist undertones, equating women or women's lady parts with cowardice. Not to mention equating them with Dick Cheney, an insult in and of itself.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sat Dec 13, 2014, 11:04 AM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I'm really torn here this is a long time DUer (2001) who's user name would indicate they are female so I'm not altogether sure the intent was to be misogynistic but they should also know better
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Funny - I was just going to add a comment to this OP, asking that some other word be substituted for "pussy" .
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Words can have multiple meanings and usages. Our hyper-sensitive political correctness is the problem here, not our words.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: My pussy has nothing to do with that fucking piece of shit. Offensive slang or not--don't be using a euphemism/slang term for my body part to describe that creep.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
still is in other countries, to describe someone who was weak, 'you're a scaredy pussy cat'.
The different use of the word here in the US is relatively recent.
I spent a lot of time in Europe growing up and never heard it used there to describe a woman's vagina. It was always used to imply that someone was frightened, like a kitten, weak, scared.
The US has its own slang, now distributed around the world through TV and Movies, and other countries have theirs.
Dick Cheney is a weak, cowardly War Criminal and no matter what words people use to describe him, that is what the name DICK CHENEY evokes.
In fact his name should be used as an Epithet.
You can do with the information you were provided with what you wish, but the fact is, the word 'pussy' meaning vagina, is an American invention.
Other countries do call cats 'pussies'. Facts are facts no matter how much someone doesn't like them.
I find it hilarious that an attack on a common foe is controversial over one lousy word that is misunderstood.
This is, of course, not the first time this has happened, with the main point of a post diverted over some ridiculously trivial misunderstanding or argument. And not one of the people in such absolute horror over this word would ever admit the slimmest of possibilities that the use of dick, or prick, could have some equivalent sexist meaning.
One could be forgiven for suspecting that people getting in such a tizzy over a word are trying to destroy this place.
It certainly makes it difficult to take it seriously, or engage in truly free speech while here.
numbers of human beings, that person needs to start asking some questions about their priorities in this world, imho.
The word 'Cheney' should strike such horror in the hearts of decent people that when they see it, all they should be thinking about are the crimes against humanity he has committed.
In the real word, you do not encounter this phenomenon, this obsessive concentration on trivia to the exclusion of everything else, no matter how important.
I have yet to experience a serious conversation being derailed because someone at the table began to yell about a particular word that they find offensive.
I think of a woman named Noor, who was raped and tortured in one of his gulags in Iraq.
I wish the people who are all in a tizzy over a WORD they find offensive would find the rapes of the women and sodomy of children in our gulags, as offensive. I'd love to see the outrage I see over one word, over those victims of our foreign policies.
In fact, what I see is you suggesting women (and men, in fact) who are sick and tired of that stupid sexist word are distracting from Cheney's war crimes.
In fact, you did the same damn thing several months ago during the Rude Pundit fiasco, except then it was the LGBT community angry about terminology.
Could you maybe, just possibly assume people posting on DU view Cheney as a chickenshit war criminal, and that maybe some of them have other issues to bring up? Or do you just have complete and utter contempt for our minorities?
Oh, and nice work dangling dead Iraqi children and Cheney's other victims out to cover for your despicable agenda.
It took me all of two minutes to check the Cheney OPs on the first two pages of GD and see if your name was among the posters. It wasn't, except for this one, and one would think for someone so concerned about Cheney's war crimes, you would be firing left and right in those threads as well.
And not just, say, in this thread, where you conveniently bring up Cheney's crimes to distract from a legitimate discussion about the use of the word p***y. The same way you distracted from a legitimate discussion of the phrase "eat a dick" some months ago.
As for me, I prefer not to discuss specifics of that bloodsucking psychopath's war crimes due to the fact I'm a veteran of his sick wars with post traumatic stress and have difficulties talking about them.
I am very, very sorry for what you've been through, but you should realize also that Sabrina, among many others here has posted hundreds of posts/articles protesting this horror and likely has people she knows with the same issues you have. Having a different view on a stupid word is inconsequential in relation to the horrors of a lying invasion that has ruined the lives of millions - she's been one of the most passionate posters here regarding all of this. You can just call me a Sabrina groupie, because I believe she's known more about all of this from the start than most others, as well as being someone who DOES believe in equality for all, including women. A word shouldn't be used to distract from a message that is 100% correct, he was too much of a chicken-shit to serve himself, but more than willing to send people to kill and be killed, or come home with those terrible injuries.
My issue is not with people discussing and reporting on Cheney's crimes. They need to be discussed. My issue is over the use of certain terminology to discuss them; the discussion over whether or not we deem it acceptable to use misogynistic or homophobic terms in these discussions is one we need to have.
The subsequent issue that comes up--which was the whole point of my discussion with Sabrina, both now and several months ago--is when people rush in to tell people with legitimate grievances over those words that their concerns are irrelevant or don't matter. It shows complete and utter contempt for the minorities who bring issues important to them to light.
Additionally, my point about my own psychological wounds from Cheney's wars has absolutely nothing to do with other people who have suffered. It was a response to the stupid whataboutism intended to imply I don't care about Cheney's crimes; the reason I don't discuss them as others do is because it's extremely and unnecessarily painful for me to do so.
And again, as I said earlier, there were over half a dozen OPs on Cheney last night on the first two pages of GD, and the only sabrina was posting in was this one, and almost exclusively to tell people their concerns don't matter.
Words that don't mean what you need them to mean are more important than the actual issue - which is - Cheney is a chicken-shit who sent others to do his dirty work, including torture. You're fixated on Sabrina and completely ignore the FACT that she's posted about this for a decade.
Get over your obsession with how she doesn't post the way you want and have a look through her posting history on Cheney's chicken-shit role in this horror. I can't believe how much can be made of one little, tiny word that I'v ALWAYS associated with being a scaredy-cat - and I really don't need to hear from you how wrong that is ..... we're all allowed our own interpretations, and I appreciate that others have theirs. It's too bad you can't do the same, instead of personally blaming someone who's brought more information on all of this to this board than most - because she doesn't agree with you. It's gotten pathetic. jmhfo.
Cheney's crimes are important.
Terminology is also important.
This is not zero-sum.
You're fixated on Sabrina and completely ignore the FACT that she's posted about this for a decade.
Utterly irrelevant. My issue is not with her previous posting about Cheney--it's about her posting about how certain issues are irrelevant in light of Cheney's crimes. She treats it like a zero-sum game, which it isn't.
You would know that if you'd read my post:
My issue is not with people discussing and reporting on Cheney's crimes. They need to be discussed. You realize this discussion came out of her obsession over how people aren't posting about Cheney the ways she wants, right?
Which, again, was something I mentioned in my post:
someone else's posts, and remembers stuff and twists it, from long ago about a particular person. I don't know where they get the time to do that, and yes, it does scream 'obsession', not with any issue, but with an individual.
For the record, my initial post on this was to defend someone who was telling the truth about the word 'pussy' and its use as an insult. She came under attack for stating a fact. I supported her because she was correct.
This poster jumped into the thread, and you can see for yourself the abusive, personal attacks which have zero effect on the facts regarding this word.
When someone equates a word to the horrific crimes committed by Cheney, including the rape of women and sodomy of children I wonder 'what is the real motive here'. Especially when they are claiming they care about women. Anyone who cares about women would know of the horrors committed against them throughout these criminal wars and knowing that, could never, ever focus on a word rather than the crimes themselves.
of Cheney's Crime over the small group that I have yet to see even mention them here.
I don't like being stalked, online or anywhere else and as a woman I find it particularly creepy coming from someone who claims to have so much 'concern' for women.
Cheney's crimes include the torture and sodomy of children. The rape of women, stories we, people like Polly, and me among others have followed since they began, in the fall of 2003.
To see the reaction to Cheney here from, I know it's just a few, people obsessing over a word in light of the suffering of those women, not to mention our own female troops who also have been raped and abused, again thanks to the criminals who started all of this.
Priorities, what should they be, a 'word' that is offensive to some people, or the mulitudes of crimes committed by this monster?
That's an easy question to answer for most of us who were there from the beginning. Trying desperately to stop it.
You too seem more interested in 'getting' someone on the internet than in the subject of this OP. Which was, Cheney, monster, war criminal and the very mention of THAT WORD, Cheney, for those who have struggled for more than a decade to stop those crimes, only REMINDS them of the crimes. THAT is the only word that stands out to me, CHENEY!
The rest of your false equivalencies and moral crusading are shameful and phony, as well.
It's also completely laughable how you talk out of both sides when you say it's a FACT that Cheney is a pussy. That most certainly cannot be a fact; it's just opinion. If you do say that Cheney is a murdering criminal, then he can't be a pussy at the same time. Enough with this nonsense.
It's also completely laughable how you talk out of both sides when you say it's a FACT that Cheney is a pussy.
The fact that to most people around the world the word 'pussy', as I have already stated, is used to imply someone is as 'weak as a pussy cat', would preclude ME from using that word to describe him. It is an insult to cats. Kitties are sweet, lovable creatures.
My feelings about Cheney are so strong that such a word would never be used by me to describe him. He is a MONSTER with no saving graces that I have ever seen. He certainly isn't a 'pussy' by any means.
But go right ahead and provide some proof of your wild claims.
Now calling Cheney a MONSTER -- that's more like it. But he's not a pussy, not even in the most literal term you want to ascribe to him. That's one of the reasons this thread was such an eyebrow-raiser (to me, anyway). He is not fearful and he's not feminine, so the whole premise looked more like the flamebait that it was.
He was FOR the war in Vietnam but was too FEARFUL for his own precious self to go, getting five deferments while others went to fight in a war HE supported.
If you cannot dispute what someone is saying then just admit it, but to go after women with the same old sexist personal attacks instead? I thought at least here women could post without that kind of garbage, that they would at least be treated as equals here.
Dec 2014
I just got back to reading here because of it happening before and had no intention of posting, but happen to love this place and many of the people in it. When I see someone unfairly attacked and things like TORTURE made a mockery of, I respond to the stalking, baiting, insulting posts, a weakness, I guess. I know exactly what they're doing, and it's beyond pathetic. People who supposedly care about women ignoring the torture of women at Abu Ghraib and all of those widows and wives wondering for years where their husbands are and how they're surviving to berate another woman using sexist, ignorant terms is just the norm here for some. The hypocrisy is (was) stunning, but it's happened so many times to some of us that it's just expected.
sabrina 1
are so damaging to women get no traction from those claiming to care about women here. And anyone who DARES to mention the despicable treatment of women, the torture, the horrific rapes and, I remember not wanting to believe it at the time, the sodomy of children, is consistently attacked here.
It seems to really anger a few people here when people dare to mention the horribly sexist brutality against women by our own government.
I remember those women. The letters they somehow managed to get out begging their 'brothers' to blow up the prison because what was being done to them was so horrible.
At first I didn't WANT to believe it. But after the exposure of the videos of Abu Ghraib we learned that there were dozens more videos. And members of Congress viewed them to determine if they too should be released.
'We are talkiing about murder, rape, torture here' said Lindsey Graham to CHENEY who was trying to stop the hearings at the time.
Later it was verified that the women's letters were true. But we weren't allowed to see those videos, however I remember the drawings of the woman, presumably Noor, and I'm almost glad we didn't get to see those videos, for her sake.
I know you will always stand up for what is right, which is why I have so much respect for you.
to read some of what was happening to them. I also remember the courageous Civil Liberties Lawyers who took on cases when they were being called 'traitors' by ignorant right wingers and at a time when the propaganda claiming those in Gitmo 'were the worst in the world'.
And I remember Cheney's sneering face as he tried to justify the crimes.
For anyone to see the word 'Cheney' without remembering these horrors, to be distracted by ANYTHING else, let alone a word, boggles the mind frankly.
I hope we see these monsters pay for their crimes, and the only way that can happen is if people focus on them and the torture report and seize this moment to keep the spotlight on the monsters who shamed this country, rather than try to distract from it.
On the good side of this thread, it has over 12,000 views now thanks to those who saw only one word which means that thousands of people did see the OP about Cheney's crimes which might have disappeared in half an hour otherwise.
If that was meant to be a gotcha moment, it failed due to the fact that you either didn't read it, or you completely misinterpreted the comment.
When I think about the women at Abu Ghraib sending out notes that said "Please KILL ME" after the horrors they witnessed and went through ...... a thread completely derailed over a word that many have never even associated with women seems completely *'ed up, but I know you and I both agree that everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of a word. Ignoring Cheney's role in the horrors and trauma for these women he damned well knew would suffer unbearably in his brutal, lying war and obsessing over someone who disagrees with a tiny little word is just strange .... especially the personal attacks over it. Weird.
I will state AGAIN, not so much for YOU because you ignore FACTS, why I would never refer to Cheney as a pussy. Pussies are cute and lovable kitties. Cheney is a MONSTER. Get it? Not a pussy, a MONSTER! I would never insult cats by associating them with him in any way.
False statement #2 from you: 'that you would bump this piece of shit thread'.
I don't like being stalked, online or anywhere else and as a woman I find it particularly creepy coming from someone who claims to have so much 'concern' for women.
Yeah, going back into your posting history is not stalking. If I was searching for your handles on other forums, trying to find your home address, emails, photos, college records, or any aspect of your personal life, then I would be stalking you.
I very clearly remember our discussion from several months ago. A fascinating part of the brain is it's ability to more solidly keep memories associated with intense emotion, and that discussion utterly infuriated me. I didn't link back to it; in fact, I didn't even bother to look for it.
Women are stalked online everyday. They're subjected to death threats, rape threats, have their livelihoods endangered, have to move out of their homes for fear of their own safety, and have to completely disappear from the internet to escape it. Don't cheapen that by saying someone remembering one of your discussions and bringing it back up is stalking you.
I'm a regular HOF poster. I've posted repeatedly on feminism, online and street harassment, rape culture, sexual assault, and misogyny. I've had to protect more than one of my closest friends from deranged exes.
The only times I ever see you bring up stalking or any women's issues is during one of these debacles, and you do the same with them as you do with dead Iraqi children, Afghan victims of rape, and torture victims: you use them as human shields to protect yourself and deflect from your tired old shtick.
You know, the same damn thing Cheney did with the 9/11 dead and my brothers and sisters who were sent to their deaths for his sick agenda.
If you truly do care about women's issues, CUT THE SHIT.
So, I'll repeat what I said, that pussy means kitten, cat and is often used by people in other countries, the UK, Ireland eg, to insult someone, to portray them as weak, like a 'pussy' cat.
Frankly I don't care what the FACTS remind you of, it won't change them.
Additionally, my comment had nothing to do with the OP. It was directed at someone who was denying what another poster said about the meaning of the word to other people. That poster was correct, the poster I addressed was wrong.
You ought to read threads before you decide to call DUers 'freepers' and accuse them of 'defending' something they were not even talking about.
In a thread discussing the offensive nature of the word p***y you throw out how some people might find the word shit offensive.
Now, this may require some high school level logic, so forgive me if it totally baffles you, but that is called what's creating a false equivalence. "Shit" does not, has never, and will never have the hurtful connotations associated with p***y or eat a dick.
Mon Dec 15, 2014, 01:17 AM
Dec 2014
it's a pattern of derailing a legitimate discussion by objections to a word casually used.
It's happened to me when I had a post hidden because someone objected to a phrase, and another time I almost had one hidden over a word, but got swarmed. Both posts were in support of women and what is known in the real world as feminism, but here were buzzwords to attract the swarm. So far I haven't been accused of racism, but it's probably only a matter of time.
And I am certainly not the only one it's happened to-- I've been on juries where it was obvious alert stalking and seen hidden posts that amazed me.
I am a Democratic committeeman, I've run for office as a Democrat and I've fought for gender justice for years in public and private venues and to be accused of sexism by anonymous harpies is not only unfair to me (and to the others it's happened to) but destructive to the "democratic ideals" I keep hearing about here.
This site has about zero credibility in the real world, and nonsense like this "word misogyny" will keep it that way.
Maybe that's what some of you have in mind.
Nobody even knows who you are, or cares much. You are simply a compilation of tiny black dots on a screen representing various amounts of spittle over presumed slights. (And don't think I think I'm anything more.)
Gender justice? In real life I've stood up for reproductive rights, maternal leave, breaking glass ceilings and other things real people care about and can't let a silly word get in the way of.
And, this is not the Democratic party that I belong to-- it's a sounding board that doesn't put up candidates, raise money, make phone calls, attend town board meetings, address local or regional issues, or have any significant effect on local, regional, or national policies or elections.
But it can get into a tizzy over a word.
I used that word because it was women specifically acting as women who were on the attack.
Of course a more generalized term could have been used, but these were all women claiming to speak for all women so why not use a term that's not gender-neutral.
Objecting to any and all gender specific terms for women would imply that it's also proper to object to any and all gender specific terms for men-- and we know that's not happening.
Such objections also imply that it is impossible for women to put their own female spin on objectionable behavior, and it would be interesting to try to prove that.
Of course, such reasoning just goes to show that I'm the misogynistic swine you and a few others believe me to be.
As for the number of messages in the thread—it's not like we have a finite space here, lol. There's plenty of room for people to speak their minds, whatever they're reacting to in an OP.
The number of posts objecting to the sexist word means that it's a real issue for a lot of people. We can't change Dick Cheney, but we can make our opinions on derogatory terms for women known, and hopefully begin to change people's use of them. People have learned to avoid other derogatory terms. You probably don't get it, but the term is offensive. The reason folks are not talking about the OP's subject, is because the OP used a vile term to do nothing more than get people to click on their OP.
This is not an uncommon practice here on DU. Let me say something really offensive in the subject of my OP, just so I can get some clicks. The reason DU sucks at times is people seem to go to all lengths to fulfill their "look at me... look at me!!! WHY ISN'T ANY ONE LOOKING AT ME!!!" needs.
Most of the time, the OPs are fantastic, but when folks start tossing around offensive words that are used to demean folks, by their sex, race, or whatever, just to get people to click on their post... Well. They probably did not have anything worth posting in the first place.
Of course he never puts himself in danger - he is his own highest priority, so why would he?
Of course he never takes a risk except to benefit himself personally - why would he risk his God (himself) if he could avoid it?
Of course he throws his "friends" under the bus - he has no friends, just foolish people who delude themselves that they are until they stop being useful to him.
You're talking about a spider with a human face.
http://anthrocentric.tumblr.com/post/81621685922/pussy-is-not-short-for-pusillanimous
1. It doesn’t make sense grammatically. Pusillanimous is an adjective — a describing word — not a noun. In the same way you can’t say “Don’t be a quiet” or “Don’t be a small” or “Don’t be a green” or “Don’t be a spicy”, you can’t say “Don’t be a pusillanimous.” You can’t tell people not to be a/an adjective.
~~~~~~~

TL;DR? Pussy is not short for pusillanimous. Going back through the research, the word is closely related to women, women’s genitalia, and weak, effeminate men. The use of the word to mean “coward” is offensive to both genders — somewhat more to women than to men — and if you have an ounce of maturity you will stop using it that way.

(note to jury, because it's inevitable, lol - the TL;DR is a quote from the link, not my words to the poster I replied to.)

Gawd knows, I support a woman's freedom of expression.
I was shocked by Madonna's performances when she became a big star back in the 1980s . . at first.
But, as I grew older and wiser I realized that her message of "Express Yourself" was very, very important.

So is Chickenhawk. He's somehow too good to go get his hands dirty and put his own ass in harm's way for his country. But he's just fine with sending everyone else's kids over there. Same thing with the romneys of the world. FIVE HEALTHY STRAPPING ADULT SONS. And not ONE of them, including dad, ever served in the military. And no, I do NOT consider "serving in the private sector" as SERVING. "Serving in the private sector" serves NO ONE but yourself.

I asked this question further down in the thread, but I'll ask again. If someone consider a word or term to be a slur, why would it be acceptable to then turn around and use that same slur in a far more personal way aimed at another DUer?

At least he's consistent. He said he wouldn't hide any posts using that word. I don't see that same consistency from folk who claim to be offended by the word used in the OP aimed at Cheney, but then aren't offended when others use that term in a far more personal and offensive context to attack the DUer who wrote the OP. If a term's considered a slur, it shouldn't be used at all.

While it was definitely used as a sexist slur in a now-hidden post in another thread, I don't think it's so clear-cut in the case of the OP, and I'm not sure if I would have hidden it or not. I got the impression that the word's being used in this thread as the equivalent of wimpy, cowardly, prick or dick. The latter two are gender-based ones that I consider to be on the same level as the one that's caused so much offense in this thread. If I thought the OP had intended it as a gender based slur (eg doing as was done in the hidden post I referred to and spoken of another DUers genitalia as being stinky), then I wouldn't hesitate to vote to hide.

Me, I wouldn't use the word at DU, mainly because I tend to go straight for profanity and don't use it in real life, but also because if some people are offended by it I don't see the point in giving those people a reason to alert on my posts. I think it's a shame that the focus in this thread from some is exclusively the word and not what an arsehole Cheney is...

"The words puss and derived forms pussy and pusscat were extended to refer to girls or women by the seventeenth century.[1][5] This sense of pussy was used to refer specifically to genitalia by the eighteenth century, and from there further extended to refer to sexual intercourse involving a woman by the twentieth century.[1]"

5. Webster's Dictionary Definition

Please see the below link to Webster's online and scroll down to the fourth definition of the p-word.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pussy

It says:

4pus·sy noun \ˈpu̇-sē\
plural pus·sies
Definition of PUSSY

slang
: a weak or cowardly man or boy : wimp, sissy

Origin of PUSSY

short for pussycat
First Known Use: circa 1942
====================

As the author of the "offending" thread on Dick Cheney, I would have responded to all the "offended" posters by noting that this is the definition of the word as I used it in the OP.

If it's good enough for Websters, it's good enough for me and should be good enough for DU.

I would have posted this in my own thread about Cheney, but I am now locked out of it. Ironically enough, all the people whose hair caught on fire over use of the P-word in DU have kept the P-word thread kicked to the top of the forum for over 4 hours.

It is poor form to decide a well considered offensive term is not offensive to use on others, but it is when it is used on themselves. According to the poster the term is not offensive at all and should be used liberally.

Big deal, I sunk to his level.

Or perhaps they were pointing out the ludicrousness of all the blathering about "cats" in this thread.

I guess you won't mind if your cat howls at the full moon. You refuse to see that the word is a slang for female genitalia and used in a derogatory manor. Clean your litter box, your cat stinks.

When the word was actually used as a substitution for the word "cat", all of the sudden you folks find it so horribly offensive.

It's amazing and baffling all at the same time.

I don't care if you find it offensive or not. I've seen what you're okay with and to me that's setting the bar pretty low.

But speaking of hypocritical, it's rather telling that you found it oh so insulting when the word was used as an actual replacement for the word cat, all the while claiming you don't find the word the least bit offensive.

Proving once again that you aren't looking for an honest discussion.

If the word is so offensive, as some here have claimed, then they really shouldn't be using it to describe other DU posters. Apparently they play by the old "do as I say not as I do double standard. It's not rocket science.

Setting the bar pretty low = I'm okay with free speech even if I don't necessarily like it. That's something I'm actually pretty proud of. Then again, I don't run around looking for things to be mad about.

But then again, is it a slur in your opinion. You defend the ones that think it is okay, yet here you are telling me it is not okay. You can't have it both ways. Like I said, it seems like it is a slur when it suits your needs, not a slur when it suits your needs.

Don't even try and start with blaming someone else for what you posted. If you genuinely thought it was a slur, you wouldn't have posted it. And I find it hypocritical for anyone who objects strongly to a slur being used to then turn around and use it themselves.

btw, I'm not defending anyone. What I'm doing is voicing my opinion. And I haven't voiced my opinion on whether it's a slur or not, so I'm not sure why yr going on about that for if not to try to divert away from the question I asked you. The bottom line is whether or not I think it's a slur, I've got no time for those who complain about it being a slur and then turn around and use it themselves and abuse those who don't agree with them...

Wrong!

Political correctness or political correctitude[1] (adjectivally, politically correct; both forms commonly abbreviated to PC) is a term used by some conservatives to describe the attitude or policy of being careful not to offend or upset any group of people in society who are believed to have a disadvantage. Mainstream usage of the term began in the 1990s by right-wing politicians who used the term as a shorthand way of conveying their concerns about the left in academia and in culture. A 1991 article used the term to refer to U.S. academic policies that sought to increase multiculturalism through affirmative action, prevent "hate speech", and change the content of the university curriculum. The term was also used by conservatives to criticize progressive teaching methods and curriculum changes in U.S. secondary schools. These debates about curriculum changes have been referred to as a Culture War. In the 1990s, the term was increasingly commonly used in the United Kingdom.

Language isn't written for a sole group of people (e.g., those not pleased by HOW the message was established, over those who actually are). For the rest of us, we can handle language in any form, because it is just that.

If any "coarse" words get in the way of your hearing the same message, don't worry… that particular message along with similar ones on this board wasn't meant for you, anyway.

Now, have a good day and don't forget to get all the stains around the rim next time you clean the DU toilet mouths.

"Puss"...

You make ask, "Why am I, a Dick, really a puss?" Well, I'll review…

Aug. 29, 1964: Dick and Lynne Cheney marry.

May 19, 1965: The Selective Service classifies Dick Cheney 1-A, "available immediately for military service."

July 28, 1965: President Lyndon Johnson says draft calls will be doubled.

Oct. 26, 1965: The Selective Service declares that married men without children, who were previously exempted from the draft, will now be called up. Married men with children remain exempt.

Jan. 19, 1966: The Selective Service reclassifies Dick Cheney 3-A, "deferred from military service because service would cause hardship upon his family," because his wife is pregnant with their first child.

July 28, 1966: Elizabeth Cheney is born.

Jan. 30, 1967: Dick Cheney turns 26 and therefore becomes ineligible for the draft.

But… that ain't all… I'm an un-indicted war criminal, since then, as the primary signatory of the Project for the New American Century, the document that set up false flag operations on behalf of oil interests...

Oh, Here's more evidence in the form of quotes that I was so wrong about so much at the expense of others -

CHENEY: Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction.
~Dick Cheney, August 26, 2002

CHENEY: "We believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons."
~ Dick Cheney, March 16, 2003

CHENEY: "My belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators. . . . I think it will go relatively quickly, . . . [in] weeks rather than months."
~ Dick Cheney, March 16, 2003

CHENEY: Two days ahead of schedule, the world witnessed the arrival of a free and sovereign Iraq.
~ Dick Cheney, June 28, 2004

JOURNALIST: About a year ago, you said that the insurgency in Iraq was in its final throes. Do you still believe this?
CHENEY: Yes.

~ Dick Cheney, March 18, 2006

um ... ok ... then why in 2007 did Bush/Cheney have to buy the surge?
CHENEY: If we had to do it over again we would do exactly the same thing."
JOURNALIST: Exactly the same thing?

CHENEY: Yes, Sir.

~ Dick Cheney, September 10, 2006

So, if you think I'm just known as "Dick", remember… I'm more… so much more…

Tons more. Some people can't even attempt to hide it. The acceptance of some on this board of blatantly sexist language says a lot. Multiple times over the last week I have read individuals use "panties" as a descriptor, now you are throwing out pussy. If you substituted "cock-sucker" for pussy every person here would get it and be offended by the connection. As would I. They would all understand how the comparison is used. Instead, it is a play on word insinuating weakness based on something attached to women. Free fucking pass there. What is weak it the intellectual thought put behind your op. Nothing pussy about it at all. Just a lack of thought and intelligence.

464. The words we use have an amazing power to impact the way we think.
Mon Dec 15, 2014, 10:11 PM
Dec 2014

Studies have shown that speakers of different languages actually think and behave differently due to the varying words that are available in their respective languages and the context within which those words are typically used.

Personally, I think it's damaging to used gendered insults in an attempt to "feminize" or "homosexualize" a presumably straight male. I know that generally isn't the intention of the person making the insult, but the very language itself carries a subtle affirmation that "male" and "straight" are inherently the "good" way to be, so we insult this man by implying that he is otherwise.

Use of language like this, while seeming to be a very small issue to some, is just one way that societal norms get reinforced and passed down to the next generation. People get angry when they are called out on it, because in their mind they didn't mean to be misogynistic or homophobic in the slightest. They were just using words the way they've heard them used all of their lives.

But to me, it does matter. The fact that people have used words this way all our lives is exactly why we need to stop using them that way now.
