It's so funny to see RWers in the media squirm over Cuba. My favorite is the "just as the Cuba policy was starting to work, Obama ended it" arguments. For instance:
"IN RECENT months, the outlook for the Castro regime in Cuba was growing steadily darker. The modest reforms it adopted in recent years to improve abysmal economic conditions had stalled, due to the regimes refusal to allow Cubans greater freedoms. Worse, the accelerating economic collapse of Venezuela meant that the huge subsidies that have kept the Castros afloat for the past decade were in peril. A growing number of Cubans were demanding basic human rights, such as freedom of speech and assembly."

If we only waited one more week, month, year, decade the Castros would have collapsed.
Reality is that the US Cuba policy was a relic of past battles. It was no longer effective and some will argue it was a mistake. Opening up Cuba is the right thing to do for both sides. There is a lot of mutual gain. And there was nothing positive left to the old policy. Obama did the right thing and it was long overdue.

(28,257 posts)I am convinced that the pointless, hurtful blockade policy we've imposed on Cuba is what has animated and extended the Castro regime, far past its time. Bravo to Obama for such a smart, historic move.
