Can we all agree now that Sony was insane to stop the release of this movie? More threats will come now if they release it on DVD. They will threaten to blow up stores that sell it I assume.Sony asked for this when they caved initially. Now the "terrorists" are empowered! Sony is clueless!!!
Hackers sent a new email Friday to Sony Pictures Entertainment, gloating over the studio's "wise" decision to cancel the release of "The Interview" and warning not to distribute the film "in any form."
The email was confirmed by a person close to the studio who requested anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter. It was sent to several employees of the Culver City, California, company that's been roiled by a hacking group calling itself Guardians of Peace.
"Very wise to cancel 'the interview' it will be very useful for you," read the message. "We ensure the purity of your data and as long as you make no more trouble."
The email also warned against any release of the Seth Rogen, James Franco comedy and insisted that "anything related to the movie, including trailers" be removed from the Internet.
"Now we want you never let the movie released, distributed or leaked in any form of, for instance, DVD or piracy," wrote the hackers.

(22,000 posts)I've continued to watch for it, but I think the chances of grabbing a copy are slim to none at this point. Whomever does have a copy is going to be everyone's best friend.

(12,041 posts)The Christmas movie season always has enormous competition and it was very possible the movie would have gotten buried at the box office if it had been released. Now because of this controversy all kinds of people who would have had no interest in this movie want to see it. I have no doubt that the movie will be released eventually, once it does get released I suspect it will sell far more tickets than it would have as a Christmas Day release.
I am not saying that Sony is doing this as a marketing strategy, nor am I suggesting that delaying the movie was a good move for them to make, but I do think that in the end this movie will make a ton of money and be seen by far more people as a result of the controversy.

(111,255 posts)The few people out there who have seen it have said it's one of the worst movies ever, a dumb and dumber team of unfunny bumblers who set out as CIA assassins.

A dumb-and-dumber/grossfest for the beer commercial demographic. Too bad -- with a comedic but sensitively-written script and a setting in an imaginary oppressive country, it could have worked quite well.

(23,272 posts)I admit, my curiosity was piqued so I went and watched.
Many, many millions more will do the same.
And watch the film for those same reasons

(23,946 posts)much more on Sony, maybe the movie chains as well, since email is a mukti-way communication, but it is not just a few racist emails, is that not obvious?
So we have a new " gloating" email but not allowed to see it?
This is all so overblown.

Furthermore, why would Sony risk making the hackers even angrier by making their warning public?
This feels a lot more like a "crisis management" publicity stunt, an unofficial excuse to delay the release until things "calm down." More to the point, I think this so-called leak by an-anonymous-person-unauthorized-to-speak-to-the-press isn't a leak at all.
As happy as I was to get the news about Cuba, I have to admit that I was also surprised that no one seemed to have a clue beforehand that it was coming. I think there's a very simple reason for that: it wasn't leaked because it wasn't SUPPOSED to be leaked!

(23,946 posts)This is fucking Sony's problem and if they want to make it and deflect it some kind of national security threat then show us the fucking communications in full.
And in the meantime stop claiming corporate personhood because then this is just a simple extortion of a person.

(20,606 posts)There are tons of copies out there and I'm sure people will be loading them to the internetz.
I know plenty of people who have seen it and most say it was okay but not great.
And everyone I know in the industry is shocked and pissed at Sony.

(22,457 posts)Why do trailers show too much of the best parts? I feel at times it ruins the movie.
I feel like some trailers I know the whole plot.
I can also imagine you at times create 20 versions of a trailer. Maybe more. Hard job I bet.

(22,000 posts)Then again often something will come out in the US (probably not released here in Korea) and I will put it on my "list" to see later, so by the time I've gotten around to seeing it, I've forgotten.

(20,606 posts)Or rather, the audience.
Every trailer is tested and most people want a mini-movie.
That is one of the reasons I hate testing.
And some trailers get to 70 some versions or have 5-10 different trailers cut before they choose one.
20-30 years ago, before testing and before the influx of executives from business school instead of film school, this job was a lot more fun. And way more creative.

Sony is better off waiting a couple months until everyone calms down and give the picture a wide release.

(2,810 posts)Logic says Sony shouldn't release a picture that very few theaters will show.
Logic says theaters shouldn't show movies when they could get their asses sued for very little profit.
But yes, I called for the entire country to shut down
Hyperbole much?

(22,457 posts)Many theatres would of shown it. And sales would of been HIGH.
Then after the weekend the main story would of been "No terror attacks makes theaters that pulled the movie look silly"
Those theaters that had not shown it would then have picked it up and we are back to normal.
So Sony still makes money.
How does you logic of Sony having "very little profit" make sense? They have NONE now. But release it to a some theaters and they have profit. And then after no terror attacks they are back to normal.
You sound like Sony to me. Scared of a fake threat. The "could get their asses sued" says it all.
You must be in the mode that these "terrorists" can pull off a terror threat any day they want but just need a good reason. Bullshit.

(19,564 posts)Nothing was going to happen here if it were released, other than it would have had a better viewing than expected. They look like a bunch of people afraid of what other secrets may be exposed if they were to stand up to these jerks. They're cowards of the worst sort, the kind who are willing to cave to some extortionist to save some other type of personal grief down the road. If they totally refuse to release it in any format then they're taking this to a whole new level of cowardice.

(2,682 posts)when MSNBC made the announcement of the missive from the hacker demanding that the film and all of the trailers be removed from the internet and not to distribute the film "in any form". As the announcement was being read, on the screen behind the speaker was THE TRAILER OF THE MOVIE!!!
It was a beautiful, yet very subtle, Fuck You to the hacker, which we now know to be the government of North Korea.
Congratulations to MSNBC for that classic bit of visual/voice presentation.

Sony had better do something soon.
