i'm a sarcastic fuck; jon is good, and he uses sarcasm in his program, but stephen's entire show is sarcasm.

(18,402 posts)The Colbert schtick got stale for me after a year or two: the same "character" all the time; it just really isn't funny after a while (to me). Stewart isn't consistently hilarious, but it's a much more cerebral funny when it is. Also, because he integrates others into his routines, it's much less, um, egocentric, and more interesting and varied. So I prefer Stewart. By saying this I guess this means I just kicked this thread anyway.

(18,402 posts)It's not shtick, it's the sad cruel truth of who they are. And they're not on at the same half-hour every night.
Honestly, I haven't watched Colbert in quite a few years except on occasion. I find it tedious. But that's simply me: it's a taste thing. It's not about politics but about the entertainment value.

(3,147 posts)Colbert hits hard. He doesn't pull punches or make nice with jerks. I have turned The Daily Show off many nights because of Stewart's guest; if I want to hear the RW meme, I'll watch the Sunday morning news shows.

(6,811 posts)that's why i'm agog with his interviews. he can script other things, but you can tell that portions of his guest interviews are flying by the seat of his pants. that and the talent to read your guest and audience to know just how far is enough to keep the game alive.
some guests are better than others at playing along, and others... well, Colbert still has to keep turning anything serious and direct back to a satirical format. it's like stand up with a confused or reluctant straight man volunteer; that's crazy hard.

(1,033 posts)Both were hilarious, and what Colbert did was always awe-inspiring, but I found Stewart funnier.
Now, what Colbert's been doing has been both absolutely brilliant and hilarious. On top of that, Stewart hasn't been as funny as he has been over the past year.
Both are great, but Colbert is better right now.

(51,076 posts)I'm a sarcastic bastard in real life but I don't like sarcasm as well on the tv. I will admit that I do like both and I will admit that I very seldom watch either one. I'm just so happy that Stewart and Cobert have the ear of the younger crowd. I listen to my son and his friends talking and they're solidly in the democratic camp and I feel its largely because of who they watch for news. I keep reminding them that the most accurate news is generally from the comedians rather than from the so called news man on cable news and they seem to agree.

(94 posts)...he skewers Fox News and the GOP in ways that Colbert doesn't and highlights their hypocrisy like no other. His defense of Common from asinine right wing attacks was brilliant.

(8,322 posts)He didn't break character testifying before Congress about his SuperPAC. He even stayed in character when he returned after his mother had been sick. Do you understand how tedious that can be, pretending to be something you aren't, day after week after month after year (Most people manage that about as well as Mitt Romney, but that's a digression).
Stewart is very good but he isn't even in Colbert's league any more, truthfully. Even they guy who couldn't make on The Daily Show, Steve Carell, does satire better than Jon these days.
Stewart, candidly, needs to own responsibility for his influence on the so-called actual media, and not cop out and say "I'm just a comedian" every time he gets called on it. Virtually every host on MSNBC and Current have, to varying degrees, adopted the schtick of recording the right-wing and playing their words back to demonstrate their hypocrisy and make fun of it. Yes, TDS set the bar but they have slipped a lot in the past few years.
