Three elderly Nebraskans have died of influenza, authorities say, while Iowa is investigating preliminary reports of three flu-related deaths among children.

Those numbers don’t necessarily mean this will be an unusually harsh flu season, said Dr. Ann Garvey, deputy state epidemiologist with the Iowa Department of Public Health.

“I think everyone’s just having to wait and see what happens yet this season,” Garvey said.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently described this as an epidemic flu season. But influenza usually reaches epidemic levels each season, the CDC’s Jason McDonald said.

3. One of our elderly church members died from flu yesterday afternoon.

Technically, she died from pneumonia, but she was admitted to the hospital Wednesday with a diagnosis of influenza.
