Utterly OUTRAGEOUS LTTE in Arkansas Democrat-Gazette TODAY

I am so flabbergasted & can't figure out if this is a deliberate joke or a "real" letter? You judge!

Arkansas Democrat Gazette: 04/25/2012

IT ALL STARTED WITH VOTE

"I wanted to comment on the letter sent in by Linda Farrell of Bella Vista and her comment about women voting.

The granting of the vote to women was the time women first began to get out of their places and out of their God-given roles as housewives and queens of their homes. This was one of the first great mistakes leading to the mess we have in this land today. The moral mess of busted families and many other things wrong in America started getting out of place way back there.

Now here in 2012 God knows how badly the train has gone off the tracks.

Women soon started cutting off their long hair, wearing men's clothes and looking like Jezebels soon after, in rebellion to God's word for them. Rebellion to God first, and man second. And the spiritually discerning person can witness the madness of this country and how it started with the granting of the vote to females.

America, your time is coming."

As an editor, I doubt I'd publish such a bizarre piece.

I realize there are throwback knuckledraggers out there that truly believe what is in the OP, but I have a hunch this is a joke because it's written like one. I hope!

He hit all the fundie points in that letter. I know them when I see them.

Also, I wouldn't trust this guy around anyone's kids… Not even his own.

It does read like a piece from the Onion.

I suppose it could be sarcasm, but these days, you never know.

As a general rule, Greek Orthodox followers are not fundie-nuts who require women to keep their hair long. I think it's two different people.

fault that families get "busted" up?

I can't believe that any self-professed Christian would want another human being to be abused, cheated upon, witness to child abuse or a myriad of other reasons families "bust" up.

When divorce first became less frowned upon, many women left abusive and cheating husbands. I realize that, now, other less hurtful and/or life-threatening things are cited for divorce, but the "busting" up of families started when women could financially get away from abusive husbands (and I'm sure it works the other way around in some cases, too).

Oh... and one more thing. Humans didn't have houses when God first created them - they lived in a garden. How can my God-given role be as a housewife when there were no houses to wife in.

Arkansas can be. . . . well. . . Arkansas. . . But it's not just a bunch of idiots; don't forget about Bill Clinton & J.W. Fulbright. . . . And UAMS is certainly world class, without a doubt.

That the divorce record on the below page belongs to dear old Dave? I'm guessing that Mrs. Sumrell cut her hair and kicked him to the curb, probably when she decided that not all men were assholes.

The Quiverfull movement not only advocates Christian couples having as many children as possible, but the concept of "Headship". That's where the man is the leader of the family, the woman submits to him in all things, up to giving him her schedule for the day to see if it meets with his approval. Children are, of course, homeschooled, with daughters staying at home until they are given in marriage. They are supposed to learn the proper way to be mothers, wives and homemakers from their mothers. The daughters are taught to defer to any man in the family, including younger brothers, so that the boys learn early that they are to be submitted to by women. One of the things the book mentioned was the many Christians who practice this type of lifestyle believe that women should not vote and do not permit their women to vote. The Dominionists and Quiverfull people would like to repeal the 19th Amendment, among others. This letterwriter firmly believes all that he's written and more.

He's an ultra-devout Catholic, though, so he comes at it from a different direction.

His nickname around town is "Dopey Jim".
