Saudi Arabia under fire after woman is publicly beheaded

Saudi Arabia has publicly beheaded a Burmese woman in the city of Mecca, sparking fresh condemnation of the country’s human rights record after a recent surge in executions.

Footage of the execution, which was briefly available on the internet before being taken down, showed Layla bint Abdul Mutaleb Bassim being dragged into what appeared to be a car park, screaming “I did not kill” repeatedly. Held down by four police officers, she was then beheaded with three blows of a sword.

The means of execution may grab people's attention, but the ethical problem of the death penalty is the main issue.

Though that video was stark and graphic, her death was quick, unlike the many botched executions here where the "victim" can suffer in agony over a prolonged period.

watch him die in agony over the course of two hours? At least there is no video in the public eye.

There's is a lot of barbarism in theocratic and dictatorial Saudi Arabia, like flogging a blogger in public weekly, but inhumane execution of a murderer is the wrong one to focus all the outrage on.

The car park dragging seems strange and barbaric as well as the oublic nature, it is state terrorism, using fear this way is barbaric.

stats from wikipedia:

Amnesty International counted a minimum of 79 in 2013.[2] Foreigners are not exempt, accounting for "almost half" of executions in 2013.[2] In fact, there are many foreigners (especially those from the developing world) who are routinely executed mainly for drug smuggling and murder. There has not been any report of a Western national being executed in the recent history of Saudi Arabia.[3]

In 2013, 39 inmates were executed in the United States,[2]

..for leaving the house without a male companion, for being alone with an unrelated man, etc.

When the teenager went to the police a few months ago to report she was gang-raped by seven men, she never imagined the judge would punish her _ and that she would be sentenced to more lashes than one of her alleged rapists received.

...

In the case of the Girl of Qatif, she was sentenced to 90 lashes for being alone in a car with a man to whom she was not married _ a crime in this strictly segregated country _ at the time that she was allegedly attacked and raped by a group of other men.

What Saudi Arabia did was no different then what Oklahoma did last week, both utilized the power of the state to murder someone.

From trying and convicting a woman to the death penalty without allowing her or any other female to testify, under a justice system that is notoriously unjust towards women. To conducting a public town-square style execution - with the woman screaming her innocence - in such a brutal and graphic manner.

Man arrested for filming execution in Saudi

Man will face charges in a military court as well as in a Shariah court for the crime

Manama: Police in the western Saudi city of Makkah have arrested a policeman for filming secretly the public execution of a Burmese woman.

The policeman was among the staff assigned with the preparations for the execution in Makkah, Okaz news site reported on Saturday.

The suspect, who was not named, will face charges in a military court as well as in a Shariah court for his act, the daily added.

He will be referred to the courts following the completion of the investigation by the public prosecution.

On Wednesday, a human rights group called for taking action against whoever filmed the execution of the woman and posted on social networks, arguing that it was a breach of privacy rights.

It's bad enough for someone to receive the death penalty after a jury trial where testimony from both and males and females is permitted.

It's even worse for someone to received the death penalty under the circumstances of the sham misogynistic Saudi legal system where that is not the case.
