now there is a mumps epidemic at the U of I in Moscow, ID and at WSU in Pullman. Plus some one was diagnosed in the Pittsburgh public schools with TB...I think it's time we tighten up our vax requirements.

(23,761 posts)I had the measles as an infant which turned into encephalitis and I am still saddled with some of the effects of that 57 years later

(26,109 posts)No lasting symptoms, except being kinda scrawny.
Sorry you're still dealing with it this far out. Glad you're speaking out. Every voice is needed.

(3,732 posts)people could get away with making a habeus corpus refusal of a needle stick of pharmaceuticals in exchange for the health care benefits they need. But no, scare tactics will be used to overcome civil liberties and force stuff on people against their beliefs. The error won't be seen until the shit hits the fan, and we'll all get to read the historical analysis of what went wrong later.

(6,568 posts)Polio and smallpox vaccines that irradiated smallpox completely, and nearly wiped out polio worldwide?
History is on the side of vaccines. Also, your right to be sick with preventable infectious diseases ends where my body begins. You're part of the herd, act like it.

(3,732 posts)As I've said repeatedly here - I have my vaccines. If I had children, I'd get vaccines for my children. I support vaccinations.
But I'm also realistic about the public distrust of science, and I'm a child of the era where that blossomed. All I see is lawsuits and political disaster coming out of an attempt to force the matter on people whose aren't on board yet.

(2,004 posts)Most people with mumps recover fully. However, mumps can occasionally cause complications, and some of them can be serious. Complications may occur even if a person does not have swollen salivary glands (parotitis) and are more common in people who have reached puberty.
Complications of mumps can include
Inflammation of the testicles (orchitis) in males who have reached puberty, which rarely leads to sterility
Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and/or tissue covering the brain and spinal cord (meningitis)
Inflammation of the ovaries (oophoritis) and/or breasts (mastitis) in females who have reached puberty
Temporary or permanent deafness
The consequences of failing to vaccinate are far reaching. Mumps is not a disease with which to take chances. I recommend having young adults immunization titers for MMR, especially for young men, especially if you have health insurance. Ohio has a lot of these anti-vaccine people, so I had my son's titer for MMR checked this fall.

(8,646 posts)there was a mumps outbreak in the NHL - a bunch of hockey players were coming down with it, some who had been recently vaccinated. So it's definitely circulating currently. It was big news here in Canada, as one of the biggest hockey stars came down with it as well.
But I don't think TB is in the general vaccination schedule...so that one's probably not related to vaccination rates.

(24,002 posts)...do the TB immunization.

(8,646 posts)I was pretty sure the schedule is similar to the Canadian schedule (although it can vary by province, I'm nearly 100% sure none have TB as a routine immunization).
