(21,046 posts)Talking about what a wonderful life they had with their kid who had trisomy of number 18.
Absolutely pukeworthy.
If having a handicapped kid is always so wonderful, why do some mothers of autistic kids (just one example I've heard about) drop dead from the stress????

(3,076 posts)First off, you got the wrong guy, it was Santorum.
Secondly, I saw that interview. I am no Rick Santorum fan. However, if they genuinely believe their daughter has enriched their lives, who are you to say that she hasn't? Your post comes off as particularly bitter and hateful.

He and his wife are about as genuine as a plastic flower!

(21,046 posts)Some people are completely worn down by taking care of a disabled child. Such as in the occasional case where someone cannot cope with the situation and kills the child because they are in extremis. Or in the secondhand quote I cited of mothers that drop dead from the stress.
Other people don't have the same resources the Santorums do, such as money for extra nurses, therapy, persons to relieve the parents when they need to rest or tend to their other children or whatever, above the bare bones the state or the Feds would provide to a disabled child.

(3,076 posts)Killing the child? You are talking about the RAREST of rare exceptions. One in a million. Maybe.
I have several friends with handicapped children. They don't have extra nurses, and all the other things you cite. And they universally love their children and consider them a joy and addition to their lives. Its difficult, but they play the hand they've been dealt.
Again, I think Rick Santorum is a dolt. But if his child brings joy to his life, and he wants to let others know about it, I have no idea why that would prompt a bitter response.

(21,046 posts)I have a friend with a 30-something year old autistic child and she has worked with many groups who advocate for autistic children, and she has told me of several women who have dropped dead from stress.
Her child is high functioning but will never be able to hold down a job, and will never be able to be left alone at home. The child has been on disability for years. I don't know how big her sample size is.

Finding favor means gaining approval, acceptance, or special benefits or blessings. " http://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/favor/
While this site doesn't necessarily make it about money, my FB friends essentially do. Occasionally it will be health rather than money, but it is almost always money. Some give thanks for being "favored" and some ask to be "favored." In any case, they seem to correlate it with their own piety - as in, if they are pious enough, it will pay in "special benefits or blessings"

(5,818 posts)There are potions, crystals, astrological anticipations and so on that promise health and wealth. I am not surprised to see this. It is interesting how contrary it is to Jesus' message and it is such an obvious attempt to assuage the guilty greedy.

(2,273 posts)I am blown away that Christians believe God took human form as a poor man, who lived off the charity of others, who did not have the best relationships and died a brutal painful death. But yeah they somehow think God wants them to be better off than he was in human form.

(9,350 posts)I am not a fan of Mike Huckabee, but he is not a Catholic. I far as I know it is only Catholic priests and nuns who take a vow of poverty. In addition, I believe the idea of what is called "the gospel of prosperity" is promoted by people in the evangelical movement.
I am not a religious scholar, but I believe most Catholics are okay with church members being wealthy, but asks that many priests and nuns live modestly. However, the evangelical movement promotes lavish living for both its church goers and the church leaders.

(25,397 posts)A play on words to emphasize a point (the juxtaposition of a true "vow of poverty" with the specious "gospel of prosperity" of Huckabee and his ilk). Mahatma Gandhi said, I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. Gandhi would have LOVED Rev. Huckabee - NOT!

Hey, preacher man, have you forgotten Christ's words as recorded in Matthew 7:26-27 ? " Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27"The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell-- and great was its fall."

Why don't fat cats like Huckabee and Robertson ever rail against greed and avarice? Oh...yeah...because they are greedy and avaricious!
But the rest of us are the real sinners, right?

(18,186 posts)There's some "Greedy Fuckers" translation the rest of us don't get to have a peek at.
It just amazes me how guys like Fuckabee can froth at the mouth over cursing and wymmins and teh gay, but those passages about avarice are completely glossed over. Never mentioned. Never sermonized about.
Like, does Fuckabee think the rest of us can't read what the Bobble says for ourselves?
I find guys like Fuckabee to be an absolute hoot, as they are The Walking Hypocrisy, and the poor wealthy souls have no idea how transparent and evil they appear.

(18,186 posts)it's a riff off a bunch of other legends and lore and traditional story-telling to begin with.
I could take snippets out of parts of it - especially song of solomon and some of the psalms - and make it say the god of that work values orgies and getting drunk.
Was just at a very pagan friend's place, who tried to give me a book.
"Too much of that Christian crap in it, even though it's very well written. It just makes you nauseated after a while."
"I'm more pagan than you," I said. "I've had enough of that drivel for seventeen lifetimes."
"Good! Let's burn it together."
Just in fun, of course, but yeah.
