Private Prison Corporations Are Modern Day Slave Traders

http://www.alternet.org/story/155199/private_prison_corporations_are_modern_day_slave_traders/

The nation’s largest private prison company, the Corrections Corporation of America, is on a buying spree. With a war chest of $250 million, the corporation, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, earlier this year sent letters to 48 states, offering to buy their prisons outright. To ensure their profitability, the corporation insists that it be guaranteed that the prisons be kept at least 90 percent full. Plus, the corporate jailers demand a 20-year management contract, on top of the profits they expect to extract by spending less money per prisoner.

For the last two years, the number of inmates held in state prisons has declined slightly, largely because the states are short on money. Crime, of course, has declined dramatically in the last 20 years, but that has never dampened the states’ appetites for warehousing ever more Black and brown bodies, and the federal prison system is still growing. However, the Corrections Corporation of America believes the economic crisis has created an historic opportunity to become the landlord, as well as the manager, of a big chunk of the American prison gulag.

The attempted prison grab is also defensive in nature. If private companies can gain both ownership and management of enough prisons, they can set the prices without open-bid competition for prison services, creating a guaranteed cost-plus monopoly like that which exists between the Pentagon and the military-industrial complex.

This starts with companies that set up red light cameras and goes all the way up to private prisons.

The companies install the red light cameras at no charge to the local municipality but share in the collected fines. The catch is that these companies demand a certain number of fines each month or the municipality has to pay a penalty.

What happens if the prisons do not remain 90% full, as per the contracts? I'm sure the states will have to pay a penalty. What happens if we get real reform and crime rates drop significantly, like under Clinton, but don't rise again, like under Bush?

Talk about a slippery slope, we've already seen judges receiving kickbacks from these private prison companies. Once we start privatizing crime and punishment en masse, we no longer have justice.

The real criminals are not the pot smokers - they're in our nation's board profiting off of how to keep us oppressed. When we live in a society where everything is bought and sold ans treated like commodities - where do we go? Since the Bush administration - and arguably since Reagan - the über rich have been completely out of control. If we don't tax them - we wind up with private prison corporations who treat prisoners like slaves with no accountability whatsoever.

We will probably need a Constitutional Amendment making for profit prisons illegal to insure that the door stays closed otherwise as I posted on another thread regarding this subject these 21st century slavers will take the nation down the road to perdition.

Thanks for the thread, xchrom.

is that they are demanding crime increase, OR that state legislatures make more laws creating criminal penalties.

THIS is why we have mandatory minimums for drug offenses - you can murder someone or rape a child and get less time than someone caught with a few baggies of weed.

THIS is why our TN legislature - which is a criminal enterprise that rivals the Mob in its scope and level of evil - refuses to allow the cancer victims in TN to have Cannabis. They LOVE the thought of cheap prison labor for their corporate goon pals. Even if those "criminal" folks are sick and dying.

Money. Money. Money. It trumps freedom, Jeebus, civil liberties, progress.

Money is the Gawd of CCA, of the TN legislature, and of any Republican you can name.

They go to church on Sunday merely to concoct new ways of fucking over the poor.

The poor whites here are so blind and deaf to reality, they can't see that it's the white guys in business suits screwing them blind. They think it's the blacks and mexicans making their state such a cesspool. You can't get any of them to see past their racist upbringings to vote away the wrongdoing.

I give up, really, and just plan on getting the hell out of here when my youngest is out of hgh school. You can't help people who let their unjustified hatred lead them straight to a prison state. The poor whites here will not be satisfied until every one of their kids is in prison. And they'll CONTINUE to vote for the evil, criminal fucks who put their kids there! Or they just don't vote at all out of apathy and ignorance.

But every day, I hope some of them wake the fuck up. I really do...

except to visit family. I told an authority figure there once: "I know I will never be sent to hell, because I did my time in Georgia."

The people of TN are much kinder and more down-to-earth. I love a lot of them, just can't deal with their apathy and political laziness anymore.

I want to go back home to NY or to Vermont. Upstate NY has turned Teabagger so I've heard, so I'm looking toward Vermont.

I'm tired of people who think they're electing Jesus just because a politician flashes his solid gold cross in their faces and says something ugly about "homoseckshuals and fiminists." I'm tired of lazy people who don't even bother to register to vote.

Thanks for the kind words. I love to go off on a good rant.... and today my hands are cracked and swollen and numb from working like a dog, and when I saw how little they plan to pay me this Friday, I wanted to just weep.

I ranted here instead. Gotta love DU

"Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness" by Michelle Alexander is another book on this subject, a must read.

I heard her speak at Harvard last week and 700 people showed up from as far away as Maine. She got a standing ovation that went on forever. You can hear her on YouTube and catch her speaking schedule at her website: http://www.newjimcrow.com. She's the new MLK, a true prophet. If anyone is going to fight this, it will be Michelle and her movement. She'll be speaking in LA and NYC in May.

People shouldn't be too smug here thinking this problem doesn't apply to them. E.g., I wonder if the private boys are going to bid on running the FEMA camps for Uncle Sam.....
