PFAW Releases New Report on the Right's Distortion of 'Religious Liberty'

Across the country, right wing extremists are fighting on behalf of individuals and business owners whose religious beliefs are offended by LGBT equality, arguing that they should be exempt from anti-discrimination laws. Just last summer, the Supreme Court gave certain for-profit corporations the right to deny women critical healthcare coverage if it offends their employers' religious beliefs. Conservative Christians portray themselves as the victim of religious persecution in an effort to deprive others of their legal rights.

Earlier this month, PFAW released a new report examining the many ways that the concept of 'religious liberty' is increasingly coming up in public policy debates across the country. But this isn't religious liberty as it has been understood throughout our nation's history. The Far Right is working to manipulate this core American value, transforming it from a principle meant to protect individuals' religious freedom into a tool for harming others and undermining the common good.

Fifty years ago, Americans decided that a private business owner who serves the public can be required to abide by laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.


It's rather interesting that the single word bolded in the phrase above, "sex", doesn't cover definitions other than "male" vs "female".
