students find popular teacher hanged in classroom, lower her to floor
A popular 31-year-old photography teacher was found hanging inside an Orange County high school classroom by students as they arrived to school on Monday,
The woman, identified by police as Jillian Jacobson, was found hanging from the ceiling at El Dorado High School in Placentia. "The preliminary investigation indicates it was a suicide," said Placentia police Lt. Eric Point. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-teacher-dead-at-el-dorado-high-school-20150302-story.html The teacher's husband was notified and grief counselors were summoned to the campus. Afternoon classes were canceled. The students flagged down another teacher who let them in the classroom, where they found the photography instructor. Together they lowered the teacher to the floor, authorities said.

3. The first concern is saving her life, if possible
Some reports said she was in cardiacv arrest at that point, and when paramedics arrived they worked to try to revive her.

12. Exactly.
Humans should do the right thing, and that's what the students did.

21. Sorry. I hadn't picked that up from the initial report.
I thought the students showed up too late to save her. If there's a chance of revival, yes, by all means try that first. This answers post #20 too.

20. No, first you make sure she isn't alive.
If she isn't, then you try to leave the area in the footprints left when you entered.

4. Why would a teacher do this in a place where students would find her?
Seems like an asshole thing to do, or it's suspicious.

I would imagine that someone isn't in their right mind when committing suicide.

10. Suicide is usually not a rational act.
Although, sometimes it may be.
We know nothing about this woman. Calling her an asshole seems a tad harsh. She's dead. |

14. I knew a teacher who killed himself at school
Good teacher, popular with the kids, but his irrational boss just hated him (the boss was just crazy) and made his life a living hell.
Shot himself in the quad the morning of a teacher's inservice; my thinking is that he didn't want people to cover up his reasons or pretend like it didn't happen. |

22. That was my first reaction too but
depression can take people some place where a lot of things don't make sense.
Then again, I've been watching too many crime shows and my second thought was this was NOT a suicide for the same reason as your question. |

15. R.I.P.
I know some people may say she was selfish for taking her own life, especially in a place kids would find her. But who knows what this woman went through to take such action.

On Mon Mar 2, 2015, 04:59 PM an alert was sent on the following post:
Why would a teacher do this in a place where students would find her? http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=6301197 REASON FOR ALERT This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. ALERTER'S COMMENTS Rude You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Mar 2, 2015, 05:08 PM, and the Jury voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT. Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE Explanation: Seems like a fair discussion. Suicide is rude. Having experienced first hand the suicide of a family member, I believe this is an appropriate question that will encourage discussion of the psychology of suicide, what drives people to do it, and the fact that most of the people who commit suicide are divided from all reason and incapable of thinking through the consequences. The number one way to prevent suicide is to talk about it. This is an opportunity for education, not deletion. Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE Explanation: Poorly phrased perhaps, but it's a fair question. Alerts should not be used for offended sensibilities. Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT Explanation: I'm not sure if this is a violation, but I'm voting to hide it for bad taste. Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE Explanation: No explanation given Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT Explanation: I think the comment was over the top. I think the poster had a right to his/her opinion but it was pretty disrespectful and out of place. Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE Explanation: No explanation given Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE Explanation: Not alert-worthy. It goes to motive. |
