Chris Matthews' Wife Is Running For Rep. Van Hollen's House Seat

By Daniel Strauss
Published March 5, 2015, 9:49 AM EST

Less than 24 hours after Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) announced his candidacy for outgoing Sen. Barbara Mikulski's (D-MD) Senate seat, there's already a Democrat running to take Van Hollen's House seat: Marriott International executive vice president Kathleen Matthews.

The news that Matthews—who is married to MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews—is running was first announced in Politico's Playbook on Thursday. Before joining Marriott, Matthews was an anchor for local television station WJLA ABC7.

She's been hinting at plans to run for office for a while now and has been outspoken on gay rights and sustainability, according to Playbook.

Van Hollen's 8th Congressional House District has gone for President Barack Obama over Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in the last two presidential elections. It's unlikely Democrats will lose control of the District.

Donna Edwards, a Dem rep in MD 4th Dist, is being touted for the Senate seat also, would mean Edwards vs. Van Hollen (among others,) and an interesting primary; 2 good Dems. Will need a replacement for Van Hollen (in MD 8th,) or for Edwards, or whomever else.

Alan Greenspan. Ever notice Alan got a free pass by "the company"? I did.

And Morning Joe's "liberal" contributor, Mike Barnicle, is married to an executive at Bank of America.

I have a feeling "the company" went pretty easy on BofA, too.

It was part of the Albritton-Sinclair bunch, the ones who boycotted Bill Maher and got him thrown off the air for making politically incorrect comments on his "Politically Incorrect" show...go figure.

But nothing to do with Mrs. Alan Greenspan, or Morning Joe...her husband is a pundit. And a partisan, too. He's not wearing a reporter's hat.

Do we want Donna Edwards to run?

DFA is asking.

'In the discussion around who will be Sen. Mikulski's successor, one name keeps popping up that should ring a bell for all Maryland Democracy for America members: Rep. Donna Edwards.

DFA worked closely with Rep. Edwards in her first Congressional race. She took on a Wall Street Democrat and, with the help of the progressive grassroots, pulled off an exciting win.

Since joining Congress, Donna Edwards has gone to the mat for working families in Congress time and time again. She was the first member of Congress to introduce a bill to overturn Citizens United, and she was a leading advocate in the House for the Violence Against Women Act.

Donna Edwards is a true Elizabeth Warren Democrat -- and exactly the kind of voice progressives need more of in the Senate.

Many Democratic politicians are already expressing interest in this Senate seat. We want to make sure that all of the best possible candidates are considered -- that's why we are teaming up with MoveOn and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee to make sure that progressive voices in Maryland are heard.'

I like her enthusiasm, and thinks she's likely to be more progressive than Van Hollen, whom I do like. I also recognize his wide experience, and 'in' with the Dem party establishment which can be good and not so good.

I really am torn here. I don't know which I'd vote for, if primary were today. And he's got plenty of $, but she's in some need, so might send her some.

I guess it's good, to have such good choices.

another good Dem. Lucky we got him (due to redistricting.)

Van Hollen's district is highly likely to remain Dem. Prior to Van Hollen, Connie Morella was a liberal repub who represented the district, 1986 > 2002, and before her, a Dem, Michael Barnes from '78.

He and STEPHANOPOULIS thought it preposterous that Hillary would run for senator. And back then, when Catholic school boys Tweety and alleged plagiarist BARNICLE on Tweety's show hosted Kathleen, they sat at little desks and giggled while she "moderated" like at a Catholic school nun session. And, as compensation for his misogyny, he refers to her on a glorified pedestal as his "queen." Around that time, he got himself into a fracas of denigrating Hillary, and then after the success of her elections, he became a booster of her and other women, hence his now "feminism."

So tonight while he went into a *tortured* transparency/disclosure about his wife running, he did it with the old Catholic schoolboy giggling again.

She seemed matter of fact the times I saw her on Tweety's show, like, he would be totally juvenile throughout her segment while she went straight ahead taking it seriously. I dunno, maybe she's a typical media self-promoter, which is the only way I can explain her putting up with him (like how Bahbwah WAHWAH likes O'LOOFAH because they are both in the self-promoting game). Well, if she's a Dem, fine. But Tweety won't be able to keep from butting-in to her campaign or whatever and mess it up, like how he wanted to be CLINTON's press secretary and it would have been (even more of) a train wreck.
