Rep. Don Young (R-AK) was on the defensive after suggesting gray wolves as a means of fighting homelessness, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.
The grey wolf in fact is a predator thats killing the cloven hoof animals, Young told Interior Secretary Sally Jewell on Thursday. And weve got 79 congressmen sending you a letter, havent got a damn wolf in their whole district. Id like to introduce them to your district. I introduce them in your district, you wouldnt have a homeless problem any more.
The remark came during a meeting of the House Natural Resources Committee regarding Jewells departments budget. The letter in question was sent to Jewell a day earlier. The committees ranking member, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), was among the 79 signatories calling on Jewell to list gray wolves as threatened under the Environmental Protection Act.
Gray wolves are still subject to intense persecution where they are not protected, Grijalva said in a statement. They currently inhabit only five percent of their historical range and are clearly still threatened with extinction.
During the meeting, Young mocked Grijalvas appeal to the department.

Regardless, my reaction was wrong and I should have never placed my hands on the young man.

(12,151 posts)So basically, the wacky Mr. Young is angry at wolves for eating the "clean" animals approved by god for human consumption.
Deranged as he is, I think a lot of the "kill the wolves" mentality comes from a similar place; sort of a dumb-dumb urge to eliminate all predators because they're competition for meat. Hunting groups in Alaska and other places often want the wolves culled to keep the herds up. Nevermind that wolves actually strengthen herds by picking off the old and sick. The important thing, to stupid people, is that humans have absolutely no competition for anything.

(10,044 posts)stupid people will have absolutely no competition for anything. Besides wolf hunters, what other group does this apply to?
