http://krqe.com/2015/03/05/seniors-vote-for-communism-themed-prom/ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) Theyre calling it prom-munism. Seniors at an Albuquerque school want their prom to have a Communism theme. Seniors at Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School near I-25 and Paseo del Norte voted online this week for the theme of their prom this year.
They wanted prom-munism, so thats what got voted for the most, said senior Sarah Zachary.
She voted for A Night in the Reef, because the prom is expected to take place at the Albuquerque Aquarium on April 25.
We have a lot of jokesters in our grade, so they wanted it to be funny and a lot of them are really intense with politics, Zachary said.
However, students who asked to remain anonymous dont believe Communism is a joking matter.
I would hope Cottonwood would realize the seriousness of having a very powerful and destructive idea as the theme for a prom, one student wrote.

(55,745 posts)Great to hear the students at Cottonwood Classical Prep have a deep interest in politics. Those offended by its discussion remind me of those on DU who fear discussion of conspiracy.

Cool theme for a prom, though. Not everything has to be super series.

(111,272 posts)Sometimes I really love this town, and the fact that the kids would have the cojones to try to do this is one of those times.
After all, this town is the one that got rid of the Westboro freaks in record time when a couple of guys who barely knew each other went into a soul kiss right in front of Daddy Phelps. They got out of there like bats out of hell and canceled everything they had planned in town.
Anyway, if the kids do it right, it'll be the red flags, red prom attire, red punch and vodka outside the venue in the trunks of cars. Stasi uniforms and Stalin mustaches will not be prevalent.
But yes, it could also go very, very wrong.

(86,646 posts)is too scary for some, especially those who don't understand what it is...
They are only partially aware of how the corrupt versions ended up not what real communism actually is without the corruption. Funny how many are so horrified by the corruption in our alleged democracy but can't get beyond that to see that corruption happens no matter the altruistic intentions and results in any form of governing. Yes, it can happen here.
If these students have a good grip on what the pure sense of communism is, then I laud their efforts to perhaps open some eyes. If it's for overt displays of a corrupted version in an intent to elevate that, then I am not for it.

Boys dressed in mechanics' coveralls.
Girls in 1950s house dresses with no makeup.
Half as much punch as they need.
Long lines outside the bathroom.
Only approved music is Russian folk tunes.
A fenced-off area labeled "the gulag" where anyone caught twerking gets sent to.
And the dance ends at 10:30 because Yevgeny Shaposhnikov (look this man up, he is great) Power Station No. 14 blew a fuse that won't be replaced until the KGB resident in Seattle buys one at Grainger and sends it to the Soyuz in a diplomatic pouch.
Ah, that's cool...it gives them more time for after-prom fucking.

(2,016 posts)Actually, I'm not sure why KKK or nazi prom parties would be offensive.
After all, they belong to the same group of mass murder ideologies.
