Selma made me sad for us all as a nation

I am from those days
i was 9 in 1965 and every night cronkite was there with us
i remember a few things about those times
horrible images of inhumanity
hopeful images of humanity
a few years later i did a paper on the times
johnson thanked the gop on the day he signed the civil rights act
he said without their support he would never gotten his legislation through
men like dirksen and javits who were able to marshall their parties support towards improving america
yet tonight when i come home and turn on the coverage of selma i am stricken at who i do not see
not a gop face to commemorate this day
i am confused and surprised that not one member felt..... i dont know maybe ...pride?
i miss the gop of my youth
we were all better off when they were better a better party

I've been thinking, though, that if Johnson hadn't withdrawn- and I remember watching that short speech- he would've been elected, and Nixon couldn't have sabotaged the Paris Peace talks. Maybe he shouldn't have been driven out of office. No Nixon, and Bobby Kennedy would probably still be alive.

But it didn't happen that way, did it?
