I don't know how many first cousins I might have.

My mother was an only child, and I was her only child. She raised me. No first cousins there. My father had one brother, and I know that brother had a few kids, but I never met them. I never met that "uncle," don't know his name, nor his kids' names, so I can't really say how many cousins I might have.

I know I've got 3 deceased half brothers, and a half-brother and half-sister from my father who aren't interested in connecting. I know my father spawned one other child put up for adoption at the same time I was born. I know he left me 3 step-siblings when he died, but I have not seen nor spoken to them since 1976.

My FAMILY includes my mother, my sons and their SOs, and my grandson. There is no extended family, regardless of any shared dna.

Why?

Would like to get about 100 responses before I draw any conclusions.

First cousins would include only your uncles' kids which sounds like less than 5...but if you don't know, you don't know.

I would think so as well. I kind of have always taken it as more or less fact that this was the case that families of the past generation or two are smaller. The only families I know of my generation (I'm 45) or younger who have more than 3 kids are usually extremely religious. And even 3 is not the 'norm' among people I know. Most are 2 kids and done.

On my dad's five. I know of many cousins. One cousin has 8.
I just got up to about 50 and stopped counting. I have many more. My granddad had several families. Even one in Mexico. I have no idea how many cousins I have. Too many.

Some of my aunts got married after I lost contact with them and I know they had kids, but I don't know how many.

My mother was one of nine children. At the time I lost track of the family, I was only eight or nine. At that time, I can think of about eight or nine cousins on that side. I had six cousins on my dad's side. On my stepmother's side, there were also six, but I don't know if we're counting those since they aren't "blood relatives."

I was born in 1946.

which is how I responded to the poll. I'm sure I have a lot more. I've actually connected on FB with a cousin I didn't know I had, the son of my favorite uncle who was single when I was a child. It's been good to somewhat reconnect with a part of my family I thought I had lost forever.

My family was neat and symetrical: my parents had 2 kids. My mom's one sibling (sister) had 2 kids. My dad's one sibling (brother) had 2 kids. 6 of us.
Next generation not so much. Cousins on moms side, neither had kids. I have 2 kids, my brother has 1. Cousins on dad's side, 1 has 2 kids, the other has 2 step kids but none of her own.

that's because of how she talked about my cat, who happened to be the sweetest cat in the world. Everyone else that ever met him liked him and he was always friendly. She kept calling him "the cat" in a really nasty tone of voice and made a crack about me bringing him back for being sick. Well, less than 36 hours after her last rude ass comment about me bringing him back to the vet who kept telling me everything was fine and dandy, they called me and said he needed to be put to sleep because he had too few red blood cells left.

I wouldn't piss on that cousin if she was on fire. She made me wish psychotic things about her when I was going to be neutral toward her. Those wishes still stand, for the record. So, I have too many cousins. I like most of the rest, except I don't like the oldest boy either because he poked a hole in my Stretch Armstrong action figure and I got a beating for kicking his ass for it. He needed his ass kicked. I kicked his ass again after getting my beating because he rat finked on me for kicking his ass the first time. He needed double his ass kicked for that shit. Fucking wimp went to West Point, joined some part of the military, but then got a medical discharge for being "allergic" to the cold weather wherever the hell he was stationed. I hope he got his ass kicked a few more times while he was in it too, because I don't like him either. I like his younger brother and I like the older sisters of the cousin that works at the vet's office, just not them.
