This won't end pretty

47 Senators telling the world that our President is irrelevant.

Either the President steps in with both fists balled and a ready knee, or it will be even far worse.

There will be a big @#$%in' fight (and there will be drama), there's no avoiding it. The only question is how big. If our side doesn't choose the ground and the time, the other side will, and that will suck that much worse.

Good luck to all of us.

1. Fortunately, President Obama does not take political advice from anonymous online posters ...

He said what needed to be said.

The important thing is concluding the Iran negotiations ... not puffing up one's chest to appear tough.

I guess they forgot about England, France, Germany, China and Russia. Besides being seditious, they are ignorant.

and why President Obama has given them the public dismissive side eye, and kept it moving ... any other reaction would have telegraphed weakness, i.e., that those 47 had the weight to carry the day.

I suspect that those 47 got the "I'm gonna f you up as soon as we get home" message.

51. Yes, I agree. They never learn. He'll chew

'em up and spit 'em out while they sit on their asses wondering why their small minds feel all dazed & confused.

I trust President Obama to handle our foreign affairs.

This reminds me how the prez ate the Republican's lunch when they met over the Healthcare legislation in 2010?

Republicans just knew they were going to embarrass him on national TV knowing it was to be televised. It was so bad Fox stopped showing it. It was a thing of beauty.

From the sound of Iran's reply today, Iran ate their lunch, with a civics lesson to boot. It's embarrassing that a foreign enemy ends up schooling what is supposedly the best America has to offer.

109. Speaking of the Constitution, you are aware that the President

cannot schedule an address to Congress OR make it mandatory. right? He has no such authority. It is not only Republicans who do not understand the Constitution, it seems.

The three branches of our government act independently on a day-to-day basis. Separation of powers is at the very core of the Constitution.

And yes, those forty-seven Senators were (until now) ignorant of the fact that the Iranian Foreign Minister is an American-educated professor of International Law. I'm sure Mohammad Javad Zarif has studied the United States constitution quite thoroughly and didn't require any "reminders" from the 47.

Sad, some think a knee to the groin and fists balled is the answer. Me, I love PBO's calm even keeled approach. It's a fact and it has proven to be a winner.

88. So who were you mocking in yr post?

Manny or Republicans? It's just that some in this thread are congratulating you because they think you were mocking Manny...

Having just found the thread that someone in this thread was complaining about posts hidden for no reason, the two I saw were personal attacks on another DUer. I'm curious about where criticism of another DUer crosses the line into personal attacks, which is something that I'll vote to hide when I'm on a jury regardless of who it's aimed at.

93. The mocking of other DUers start and end with whom is being mocked ...

and who is doing the mocking.

Some posts, directed at/to particular DUers, even in response to being mocked, will be alerted on a nano-second after hitting send (especially if posted in the the mid-day or early evening, I've noticed); while other posters, can mock an entire race, then apologize for the post (as insensitive), then deny even having made the mocking post and rather than receive an alert, the thread gets 100,000,000 recs.

So it doesn't matter where my post was directed.

187. I believe in holding everyone at DU to the same standard...

I don't care who they are or who hates who. If I'm on a jury for a personal attack on another DUer I'm going to vote to hide. I don't like pile-ons and the name calling and shit I've been seeing and my vote on juries is my way of saying they suck. And even in this thread I'm seeing different standards being applied when it comes to personal attacks on people they do like vs personal attacks on people they don't like. If calling another DUer names is 'mocking' them and entertaining, then they should be the last folk to pop up in other threads complaining because they see themselves and those they like as victims of name-calling, alert-stalking and attacks.

And when it comes to 'sides', hasn't it occurred to any of you that yr all on the same side? I think there's some DUers who really lose sight of what is the opposition and they're the ones that need to go visit Discussionist to remind themselves of what every longterm DUer here is on the same side against. Sorry, that was a general observation about what I've been seeing

by "our side". Therefore it was mocking Manny and anyone who is deemed to agree with him, basically calling him and others posers and whiners. It is a post worthy of a hide, though I didn't alert on it, yet, anyway.

No one has special immunity from criticism, just as no one has special immunity from hides. Well they're not supposed to anyway, but as we all know, the jury system is a crapshoot and also just plain crap.

But I know what you are insinuating so I will tell you that when I am a juror I vote to hide based on content and not personality, the same way I dole out criticism/praise of a politician.

posting the results of one of the alerts......others were alerted on for merely expressing dismay at alerts. The juror comments?????

Priceless.

Strangely enough, all the alerts had pretty much the same verbiage.

Interesting that you and sheshe took it to mean Dems against Dems. There's nothing wrong with a little unity sometimes, you know. No reason to actually dislike people just because you disagree with them and as a result having to fight with them rather than find common ground.

You can feign innocence and try to be coy, but that's what happened. That post was way beneath you. I would expect it from others.

Your inability to post the pics directly probably helped save it. (that was not meant to be mean, just an observation with a little ribbing thrown in)

Non-ego driven folks, successfully living, and accomplishing, in the real world don't choose tough guy appearance over accomplishing their goal.

But that said, I couldn't find an appropriate picture on which to draw a mustache, nor would it have conveyed my intended message ... that being, the people calling loudest for presenting a "tough guy" image, are generally uninvolved wimps in real life that are easily recognized by folks as whinny children, wailing for attention.

one realizes that you cannot MAKE anyone do anything that they are not inclined to do. And in this case, making them understand is a waste of time and effort ... the best we can hope for, is staying astep or ten ahead of them to negate their idiocy.

That, as an adult, is recognizing the needs of the whole ... playing their childish games. Meeting insult with insult, disrespect with disrespect, force with force might make observers feel good; but, it does not meet the needs of the whole.

And as an adult, one would recognize your final comment as a lie ... just by reading the comment.

And even with that one or more ticket, can you think of a situation when you would speed, even in front of a cop?

Come on ... you know that no one can make someone do what they are not inclined to do ... you can make it uncomfortable for them if they act in a way you do not want ... but still, they will act how they will act.

ETA: And a focus on attempting to make them behave is merely an attempt to exert control and just distracts from accomplishing what you set out to accomplish.

Edited a second time to add: Of course, perhaps, your goal my be to control the republicans rather than strike the Iranian deal or get Immigration reform or any of President Obama's other initiatives.

And now you are questioning Manny's 'loyalty' to what, his country?

I would think that for once you could set aside whatever it is you harbor against Manny and other Duers here and focus on what just happened here in this country. What happened may not be outright treason, but it sure is close enough when US Senators are willing to follow a Foreign Leader's lead to try to get this country to use our military to fight HIS WAR, in direct opposition to the Foreign Policies of their President.

Manny is an American. Just so you know. I suspect that is the side he is on.

79. I think the Iranian have said what needed to be said also, giving those treasonous bastards a lesson

on their own Constitution.

The President doesn't need to say more than he has said. But DEMOCRATS need to be as brazen and as angry and outraged publicly as they can be right now.

Bullies do not respond to 'decorum'. They are cowards and the only thing that works with bullies is to confront them.

Democrats worry too much about what the 'right' will think of them.

They should call this what it is, it is bordering on treasonl.

They are aligning themselves with Iran's 'terrorists', or 'hardliners'. And Dems should use that word as often as Rudy Giuliani uses it right now.

And they should not stop, or let the story go away until after the election.

Now is the time to find good Democratic candidates to run against every one of those traitors, putting the outrage into action.

I have a feeling that even some Republicans are not supportive of having our Senate following the lead of a Foreign Leader, trying to drag our military into Iran to fight that Foreign Leader's war.

what any moron from that side of the aisle thinks about them.

They need to go on the OFFENSIVE instead of always being on the DEFENSIVE.

And this latest stunt is a perfect tool, handed to them by the Bibi puppets in the Senate, to grab and hold on to like a dog with a bone and just not let go until it's in the public consciousness that these people are not fit for public office.

Eg, when asked about the email debacle, respond with a reference to the 47 morons, 'speaking of email, does anyone know if these people have been in communication with Iran's hardliners/'terrorists' by email?

Dems have no strategy to deal with bullies apparently. You never let bullies take control of ANYTHING.

Or, maybe ... the guy in the bar that cowered in the corner as the big drunk guy messes with folks. Then, loudly talks about what they would have done had the big drunk guy approached them ... 20 minutes after the big drunk guy leaves the bar.

12. It's interesting because in some ways its bigger than Obama

Most presidents recognize they also defend the Office of the President. Obama has certainly used the powers of the office and understands it, as only a president can, as a Branch of Government that must be protected as much as the Courts or Congress.

He (meaning Obama) might be secure enough to play the Senate letter as irrelevant, but future Executives may not be so well situated. In future times of trouble a less secure president might not be, and letting this interference of Executive Branch process stand could set a precedent that diminishes the Executive Branch thereby endangering the nation.

Democrats will never have the anger and commitment that Republicans have even though our anger would be justified.
This skirmish will disappear in the next few weeks or so, papered over by some new Republican scandal that also will not damage Republicans.

I've seen over and over Republicans do things that should destroy them as a party but nothing ever, EVER, happens except they might lose a little popularity for a short time. They always bounce back more popular than ever.
No, they won't suffer. They will only be made heroes by their base and ignored by everyone else.

I wish we could feel a real force behind the Democratic party that would start to push back but I haven't in the past and don't feel it now.
Democrats have no ammunition to fight the mighty Republican propaganda steamroller.

It's all a tempest in a teapot and we know who owns the tea.

Our side? First Way Manny, Second Way, Third Way? Or the Presidents way. Calm cool and very collected.

74. Indeed.

This is a multinational high-stakes negotiation with a number of powerful countries taking part.

The GOP is essentially irrelevant and they're throwing a tantrum because they think their opinion isn't being heard at the negotiating table.

The notion that Obama needs to act like a teenager in fist fight is absolutely absurd.

He just needs to keep doing what he's doing and continue with the negotiations.

87. It's a good setup. Prediction:

If Obama continues to do his job like he always does, there will be a deluge of posts complaining that he's weak, spineless, caving, there'll be some snarky remarks about "chess playing" and we'll be 2 seconds away from him handing the GOP our Social Security. Again.

And as with Syria, if he pulls off the negotiations, it will be entirely someone else's doing. A foreign despot, for preference.

89. Thing is, that's not what this is about.

It's not what's going on here. Who cares what someone playing a game on the internet says? I know I don't.

What we have here, what's really taking place, is the Republicans are extending their recent tactics they've used against the opposition party in the US (Democrats for those confused) to international policy. Which, if they get their way, will very well result in the US being involved with Israel (Netanyahu) in a military action against Iran. Before that happens, since Iran is an enemy of ISIS, we'll see ISIS surge in the region, instability will of course increase, which will have an impact on global oil prices (profits!), the MIC funding will be increased (profits!) due to the instability in the region and the military buildup will begin. If they get their way and it leads to a war with Iran, Russia and China will very likely be their allies.

Needless to say this isn't carved in stone yet at this point in time, but it's apparently a plan being sought out by our current Republicans in office. Yes, it's insane, I realize that. But, I'm not imagining things. I told people Iraq was going to take place in 1999, before they ever elected Bush and found the route to make it happen. They're doing it again, and this time they're not even trying to be discrete about it. I don't doubt the rest of the world is watching the same repeat performance and shaking their heads along with me.

Meanwhile some want to quibble about "gotchas" and semantics, and just pretend it's business as usual until they search for the next person to blame fifteen years from now for what transpired? Let me help them out a bit, the people to blame are the ones in office right now spreading this insanity. Now is when we (meaning we the people) need to get off our butts and make a fuss, not after the events are in motion. That's how our process works. We made that mistake before and we lost, badly. We bickered among ourselves and we bellyached about how the parties were the same and we got George W. Bush and subsequently the Iraq war. If we let history repeat itself, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

At this moment the only thing we have in our corner, the corner of peace, are our minority of Democrats in office, who seem to be aware of what's taking place, and the president. Yet, some people want to mock them because voters put these idiot Republicans in office? Will we never learn from our mistakes?

42. How messed up is it that Iran is looking more reasonable than the GOP under Obama?

I am not kidding.

Even Iran is calling their letter a bunch of propaganda. I know it has been posted around DU all afternoon, but it should be linked again: http://iranprimer.usip.org/blog/2015/mar/09/part-ii-iran-responds-gop-letter
It is very interesting that while negotiations are still in progress and while no agreement has been reached, some political pressure groups are so afraid even of the prospect of an agreement that they resort to unconventional methods, unprecedented in diplomatic history. This indicates that like Netanyahu, who considers peace as an existential threat, some are opposed to any agreement, regardless of its content.”

Zarif expressed astonishment that some members of US Congress find it appropriate to write to leaders of another country against their own President and administration. He pointed out that from reading the open letter, it seems that the authors not only do not understand international law, but are not fully cognizant of the nuances of their own Constitution when it comes to presidential powers in the conduct of foreign policy.

Foreign Minister Zarif added that “I should bring one important point to the attention of the authors and that is, the world is not the United States, and the conduct of inter-state relations is governed by international law, and not by US domestic law. The authors may not fully understand that in international law, governments represent the entirety of their respective states, are responsible for the conduct of foreign affairs, are required to fulfil the obligations they undertake with other states and may not invoke their internal law as justification for failure to perform their international obligations.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister added that “change of administration does not in any way relieve the next administration from international obligations undertaken by its predecessor in a possible agreement about Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.” He continued “I wish to enlighten the authors that if the next administration revokes any agreement with ‘the stroke of a pen,’ as they boast, it will have simply committed a blatant violation of international law.” He emphasized that if the current negotiation with P5+1 [Britain, China, France, Germany Russia and the United States] result in a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, it will not be a bilateral agreement between Iran and the US, but rather one that will be concluded with the participation of five other countries, including all permanent members of the Security Council, and will also be endorsed by a Security Council resolution.

IF nothing else, Iran sees the extremists in the United States.

and most rational people see the extremists in Iran. This is about negotiating with those that are not extremists.

It's amazing to me that Iran can see this and the GOP cannot.

49. The end game will be punishment enough.

If the letter was meant to bolster hardliners in Iran Obama calling them on it "common cause" is severe. The response by Iran was a gut punch to the United States Senate. Obviously Iran understands the U.S. Constitution better than 47 United States Senators. If a deal comes acceptable to our European and Asian allies, accepted by Russia and China; Israel is out of the brinkmanship war business. This entire episode was an act of desperation by the Republican Party one they are losing. The ground has already been chosen and the date has been set.

If this all fails guess who will be blamed?

Obama has no support in the blogosphere or in the MSM. There will be blurbs, there will not be outrage.

And because Obama is the adult in the room rather than chastising the repugnant Republicans, he'll apologize for their behavior to Iran (in private) and the workings of the deal will continue, quietly, behind the scenes.

But the President will do what he always does, stand tall and use his intellect to make his point. It's a very effective strategy. The one you suggest is not a very effective strategy and would work to detract from the job he's doing in negotiating with Iran. And he's not alone in that negotiation.
