Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Poster Child for GOP's Problems

By Isa-Lee Wolf

COMMENTARY | Elisabeth Hasslebeck is everything that's wrong with Republicans. Discussing Osama bin Laden's death on the May 1 episode of "The View," with unmasked glee, she giggled and said, "I think of all the people who voted for Obama, right? Wearing tie-dyed t-shirts with peace signs and protesting are now choking on their Ben & Jerry's ice cream basically because their president blows the brains out of somebody and is now deemed, as the New York Times had it this weekend, as 'Warrior in Chief.' I think he's done a great job in terms of military experience right now, but they are eating their words."

Quick question. Which words? That we wanted to shower bin Laden with peace, love and understanding? Darn, I missed that meeting.

Nonetheless, thanks, Elisabeth, for illustrating it so clearly. Not your point; your point is ludicrous and defies logic or relationship to reality. No, thanks for a clean example of the current Republican knack for taking anything with a hint of liberal, dehumanizing it, debasing it, and then claiming it proves your point.

I also think you've confused voting for Obama with being an extra in the musical "Hair," but that's a different issue completely.

2. Yeah, it's not like Obama made getting Bin Laden a campaign promise and we didn't expect it.

I thought I was voting in change, like having a country and a government that preserved, protected and defended the Constitution rather than being run by a personality cult. There's been some change in that respect, but not enough. Of course, as long as everyone feels real good about it, I suppose a little shortcut through the rule of law is perfectly all right.

There still are some folks who believe in the rule of law, and who are horrified at a government that runs on summary executions and indiscriminate missile strikes. They're called Americans, and it's called having principles. What Ms. Hasselbeck believes is anyone's guess, as it appears to shift with the breezes of fashion, for if it prosper, none dare call it treason.

Sorry I can't trim my ideals to fit the fashion, and I know: "Everybody is rejoicing over the wiping out of the four pests"* (just as in Mao's heyday). But I really and truly do care about the Constitution and the fact that we'll shit-can it over some sick impotent old man thousands of miles away dismays me more than I can relate. In addition, we're running a program of indiscriminate missile attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and the Phillippines (to name just three), blowing up buildings and people on little more than someone's ability to look at a video feed and decision to push a button. When we murder innocents by remote control, the people are assured that it was just another "isolated" incident, sorry for the mess, and next time we'll blow up the right building or people.

These are heinous and infamous acts that hurt our country as bad as or worse than the depredations we decried during the Bush years. Just because it's Obama's hand on the football doesn't provide an excuse. Yeah, I'm a simpering, tie-dyed crunchy granola dirty fucking hippie, I know. But my loyalty is to the rule of law, not the cult of personality. So I'm also an American.

*Obscure reference to an old Doonesbury cartoon, but I'm kind of old myself, and I remember stuff.
