Ted Cruz: I Started Listening To Country Music Because Of 9/11

Leaving no political stone unturned, newly-declared presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) had a very particular answer on Tuesday when asked about his taste in music.

"You know, music is interesting," he said on CBS "This Morning." "I grew up listening to classic rock, and I'll tell you sort of an odd story."

"My music taste changed on 9/11," he said, followed by a pause.

Co-host Gayle King nodded.

"I actually intellectually find this very curious, but on 9/11, I didn't like how rock music responded," the senator went on. "And country music, collectively, the way they responded, it resonated with me." Cruz did not specify which rock artists "responded" to the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks in a way that led him to switch genres. But he repeated that he's been firmly country ever since.

I happen to not see any of them, particularly when the jingoism is so overwhelming. Have always hated it, and always will. I don't find a lot of redeeming musical value in hip-hop or rap, either. I blame early and frequent exposure to Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, etc. At least a lot of '70s and '80s rock had melody, harmony, and actual orchestration. Listening to Chicago was almost as good as listening to symphony.

It was because of country music's collective response to 9/11 and the rahrah let's go bomb the whole middle east mentality that I decided to stop listening to country music.

Notable exceptions being the Dixie Chicks and replaying old Garth Brooks cds.

Which event do we think shaped his love of country music?

probably a fan of his fellow Canadians Nickelback. They probably get together on July 1st (Canada Day) to make maple syrup, eat poutine and drink Molson Ice. Maybe get a double double from Hortons before the hockey game, eh?
