Vietnam Dog Lovers Become Vigilantes to Stop Pets From Being Eaten

QUANG TRI PROVINCE, Vietnam — It wasn't supposed to be a double homicide. A few snapped limbs? Fine. Something nasty enough to make those dog thieves sorry they'd ever come to this tiny village in central Vietnam.

But once cries of "Dog thieves! Come quick!" rang over the moonlit rice fields, the intruders were as good as dead.

A post-midnight ambush had caught two dog-stealing bandits. Villagers jolted awake inside their cement farmhouses. They raced down mud paths to the spot where a few of their strongest farm boys had laid out the thieves in a ditch.

Dog thieves are a hated scourge in Vietnam, appearing at odd hours to snatch up pet dogs and cram them into sacks. The village, called Nhi Trung, had been robbed of more than 200 dogs in just one year, according to the village elders.

Families had wept over their pets' fate: sold to butchers for about $20 a head and roasted for diners many provinces away.

I hope they rid their country of this scourge. It would be nice if the dog fighters could be taken care of here.

I always thought the Amish were quaint until I found out how they raise dogs as an agricultural product. The USDA should be taken out of the dog equation entirely as dogs are companion animals, not agricultural animals, and the laws regarding the agriculture of dogs are horrific.

I despise the Amish for this, and the horrific way they treat their children, with it all protected. Someone not in a cult would go to prison for the things so many do, and allow done, to their kids. At at least sometimes other puppy millers get raided, if they aren't protected cultists. They hide a lot of darkness behind their quaintness.

you would support executing human beings for killing a chicken or a turkey? Asking that question is not coddling.

These people TORTURE the dogs to make them "taste better". They steal people's pets in the night, in the article. These animals are STOLEN. Even if you do not comprehend our partnership with dogs, have zero empathy, and just want to put people who care about dogs down, surely you understand that stealing what is precious to others is WRONG, and that torturing dogs is something done by psychopaths.

All you want is argument, to pin people down and put them down. People who hide their assumed superiority to those capable of empathy behind political correctness, are disgusting. Some people who call themselves progressives would secretly LOVE to be driving the dog-killing trucks just to enjoy that, somewhere, they are upsetting dog lovers.

want an argument. My response was to post that called for the killing of people. I see that that post has been hidden. I am 67 years old, pets have always been an important part of my life. Mostly dogs and cats but I have also owned birds, fish and reptiles as pets. I have no problem sending an animal abuser to prison for mistreating or abusing animals. I do have a serious problem with the suggestion that people be executed for killing animals.

Although I disagree about the theft part. But poverty is poverty.

Hell of a lot of Ethnocentrism going on in these posts.

Ethnocentrism is judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one's own culture. Ethnocentric individuals judge other groups relative to their own ethnic group or culture, especially with concern for language, behavior, customs, and religion.

Oh and BTW I have had dog. It's not bad at all. Pretty tasty

I've read stories about how people will force the trucks to stop by the side of the road and a bounty deal is reached, paying for each of the dogs in order to release them. The younger generation is taking a stand against this crime spree of dognapping. It makes me hopeful.

Dogs are supposed to be Man's Best Friend--not Man's Best Dinner! In other words, dogs are members of our families and do not belong on the menu no matter which culture you live in.

This practice of eating dog meat should be criminalized worldwide.

On an emotional basis, I think dog meat traffickers should be jailed for decades, and to add to their punishment, each trafficker will be guarded by trained attack dogs, who will remind them day in and day out of the crime these so-called humans committed against Man's Best Friend. I guess those thugs will think twice before they ever slaughter another dog when Brutus bears his teeth at them.

a 1 year jail sentence would not achieve that

same reason many game preserves in Africa just shoot poachers on sight. Not even a "hands up", just line them up in the crosshairs and done.
