A BIGGER question was - Kerry's naval records were 100% available - and he even had them on the web for over a year. I read them in 2004 - I admit that I read them on his web site because I wanted to know more and I became aware they were there when someone used them to definitively answer an important question on the Kerry blog - what color his eyes are (hazel - from other responses they are mostly a deep blue switching to green)

But far more important is that the fitness reports that described his behavior for various time intervals. They were not only entirely positive - they showed a very unusual young man. In many - both on the large ship and on the swiftboats, it was mentioned that those reporting to him were extremely (unusually) loyal to him. He was described as a very intelligent, creative leader. (I somehow think that McCain's bosses did not right things like this.) The last one, when he was leaving the Navy wished him well and praised him as the type of man needed.

The reports - written back between 1966 to 1969 - show a young man with the character, integrity, personality and intelligence. All things that have likely contributed to his ability as Secretary of State -- and showed he was well suited to be President. The media simply ignored all this.

THAT was why the Republicans had to keep him from further using this background and the character witnesses that the men who REALLY were on his boat offered. As it was he made the race close, without the SBVT - imagine that one thing Kerry could have ended with in addition to his current issues was something like the comments made by one of his men - later a black minister - his comment, used in a primary ad, spoke of how Kerry would come around to each person on the boat and ask them how they were doing - he then said Kerry was the only superior who ever did that. (or he could have had Rassman the Republican ex-marine he saved in Vietnam)
