http://jimhightower.com/node/8584That "something" is the trade scam called Trans-Pacific Partnership. The scam is that TPP only masquerades as a trade deal, while actually being a gross enlargement of multinational corporate power over our people's sovereignty. Specifically, a chapter of this secretly-negotiated, 12-nation deal empowers foreign corporations to challenge America's laws, rules, and court rulings whether local, state, or national by suing our governments in private, corporate-run tribunals set up by the United Nations or the World Bank.
That's what made Chuck nearly upchuck. "Savvy, deep-pocketed foreign conglomerates," he gasped, "could challenge a broad range of laws we pass at every level of government, such as made-in-America laws or anti-tobacco laws." Exactly....
Even the corporate and governmental elites who have secretly negotiated this raw deal knew that its uglies would gag you, me, and even Schumer. So they added an extra layer of secrecy, mandating that the sovereignty-busting chapter not be declassified until four years after TPP is approved.

(9,086 posts)It's a good idea to vote but I thought you were asking how can people change the system without participating in it.
People sometimes organize to challenge dominant systems in, ya know like, other ways.

(49,990 posts)Why vote for someone who passes bills that serve corporations and not the people who voted for them? To be clear, I'm not advocating not participating, but if TPP passes, and most of America doesn't want it, I can see how people will be turned off by the political process.

Now who is pushing this thing again? Who negotiated it? Makes ya wonder, don't it?

(9,086 posts)They know there is a popular movement against TPP and so they have to pretend to care and "fix" it before passing it.
Schumer and a few other big dogs will come in a say Oh My God we found all this horrible stuff in the TPP. OK we're taking it out now so all your movements can stand down with the outrage. Then they pass a so-called compromise or "fixed" version of the deal, but it will still screw workers, the environment, etc.
The only acceptable result is NO TPP. It can not be fixed because it is rotten to the very core. The only purpose of TPP is to serve corporate power.

You are correct :
It can not be fixed because it is rotten to the very core.

(27,814 posts)... does the statement "This is really troubling" equal "Schumer upchucks at sight of TPP"?
"So they added an extra layer of secrecy, mandating that the sovereignty-busting chapter not be declassified until four years after TPP is approved."
It is the drafts (working papers re negotiations) that will be declassified after four years, NOT the chapters of the final agreement themselves.
It's sad to see this kind of hyperbolic, fact-free "information" being disseminated - no less believed.
