Rare white buffalo calf killed in North Texas

Authorities are investigating the death of a rare white buffalo on a North Texas ranch just days shy of its first birthday.

Lakota Ranch owner Arby Little Soldier says he found the buffalo, named Lightning Medicine Cloud, dead Monday. The buffalo's mother was found dead the next day.

Last year, thousands attended a naming ceremony to celebrate the calf's May 12 birth.

According to Lakota Sioux lore, the goddess of peace once appeared in the form of a white buffalo calf.

Arby Little Soldier says the calf "was the hope of all nations." He said a birthday celebration planned this month will be a memorial instead.

UPDATE: The owners of the Lakota Ranch have released the following statement to Indian Country Today Media Network (the original news report follows it):

To my fellow Native Brothers and Sisters in Indian Country,
Lightning Medicine Cloud, a true spiritual blessing was born at the Lakota Ranch on May 12, 2011. He now has joined his earth father and our heavenly father, and Lightning’s mother, Buffalo Woman, also went on to join her son one day after Lightning left the earth.

There is an internal investigation through Hunt County Sheriff and Homeland Security in process, and a $5,000 reward offered for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the premeditated crime deaths of Lightning Medicine Cloud and his mother, Buffalo Woman. Thus far, the investigation has concluded that neither were killed by natural causes.

This is so absurd to me. Millions of animals are killed in this country each year, but people are bringing up the death penalty because one of those animals was white. WTF?

Native American symbol but to many of us who watch these things it was a rarity of nature that is protected.


Since they skinned it my guess is that they are selling the hide to some pissant collector.
