From what I read here on DU from many who live there, racist attitudes are still pervasive in the South.

I have never judged anyone based on where they are from, or thought one group more enlightened than another because of geography. The history of the South is different, however, from the history of the North in relation to slavery and discrimination and pure terrorism of it's black population, most of whom lived in the South. Trying to pretend there is no difference is simply ahistorical.

10. Again I will post this anecdote from my childhood. Which I lived.

I was involved in the forced busing pilot project. One was in Charlotte, NC (where I lived) and one was in Boston.

We integrated with very little problems here.

In Boston, (IN THE NORTH), the white thugs tried to surround and turn over school buses with little black children in them.

That DID NOT HAPPEN in the south.

I know y'all hate the truth, but there it is.

The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Their enrollment was followed by the Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas. They then attended after the intervention of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Several segregationist councils threatened to hold protests at Central High and physically block the black students from entering the school. Governor Orval Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard to support the segregationists on September 4, 1957. The sight of a line of soldiers blocking out the students made national headlines and polarized the nation. Regarding the accompanying crowd, one of the nine students, Elizabeth Eckford, recalled:

They moved closer and closer. ... Somebody started yelling. ... I tried to see a friendly face somewhere in the crowd—someone who maybe could help. I looked into the face of an old woman and it seemed a kind face, but when I looked at her again, she spat on me.[6]

On September 9, the Little Rock School District issued a statement condemning the governor's deployment of soldiers to the school, and called for a citywide prayer service on September 12. Even President Dwight Eisenhower attempted to de-escalate the situation by summoning Faubus for a meeting, warning him not to defy the Supreme Court's ruling.[7]

Woodrow Wilson Mann, the mayor of Little Rock, asked President Eisenhower to send federal troops to enforce integration and protect the nine students. On September 24, the President ordered the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army—without its black soldiers, who rejoined the division a month later—to Little Rock and federalized the entire 10,000-member Arkansas National Guard, taking it out of the hands of Faubus.[8]

In the South most whites fled the public school systems and sent their children to private academies once integration took place.

Segregation academies were or are private schools in the United States established in the mid-20th century to enable white parents to avoid having their children in desegregated public schools, which were mandated by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling Brown v. Board of Education (1954). It had determined that segregated public schools were unconstitutional, but because Brown did not apply to private schools, the founding of new private academies in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s was a way for whites to practice segregation.

While these schools were established chiefly in the Southern United States, private schools existed nationwide that were heavily segregated in practice, though perhaps not intentionally.

Since the late 20th century, as social patterns in United States have changed, many of these private schools began to admit minority students; others have ceased operations. Still others, in poor, majority-black regions such as the Mississippi Delta, continue to operate with few, if any, black students.

I was very lucky not to have it happen to me in high school. It happened to many of my friends, both black and white.

Many still reside there.

Today, I'll head onto the beach on Edisto Island. I'll smell the salt air and look at the beauty of the Carolina low-country all around me in my kayak. The sun will be warm here today; the birds are already chirping. You smell your exhaust and pollution up there...perhaps that is what gives you all such a crappy outlook on life. I'm going to enjoy the beach. Ah, song of the south.

I truly feel sorry for all of you with such hate in your hearts. I'm so lucky to have been born here of English parents. They also disliked the north when they came to this country. They found the people there incredibly ignorant.
