I lost a friend similarly. We're never ready.
I was thinking about you all day today actually - knowing this was happening.
Hey, he's at peace now and probably laughing at all of us (in a good way) , ya know?

(149,611 posts)I hope he's running out there. That was something he always missed doing...
And yes, laughing too.

(86,590 posts)I do this when someone dear passes. Have done a few times in recent weeks. It doesn't take long but gives one a sense of closure... the song is meant to guide the soul to the good blue road to meet their family.
I didn't know this man but was here shortly before he went in for his surgery, I had hoped he'd have a good recovery and followed your updates. He meant so much to so many here that I felt compelled to do that... I am sorry for the sadness of those left behind. It is the only thing I know to do in these instances.

An honest man here lies at rest,
The friend of man, the friend of truth,
The friend of age, and guide of youth:
Few hearts like his, with virtue warm'd,
Few heads with knowledge so inform'd;
If there's another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this.

(21,046 posts)The last paragraph of The Bridge of San Luis Rey, a short novel by Thornton Wilder, 1927:
But soon we shall die and all memory of those five will have left the earth, and we ourselves shall be loved for a
while
and forgotten.
But the love will have been enough;
all those impulses of love return to the love that made them.
Even memory is not necessary for love.
There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning."

(21,046 posts)I read it at funerals because I think it's appropriate for anyone to state the primacy of love, religion or no religion.
Then there was the time I read a bunch of Buddhist quotes at a graveside service in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, just outside of Tulsa. They are very conservative and right-wing religious people there.
All the Christians ran off and wouldn't talk to me afterwards (I guess I had those heathen cooties) and one person told me I upstaged the preacher!!
"Be as lamps unto yourselves."

I am pretty sure that with you around they are getting all the support they need and that is so important.
Good that you are on hand to help. Sounds to me like they were prepared for the worst, even tho they hoped for the best...
It is what happens...
CaliforniaPeggy
(149,611 posts)They're pretty reality-based, and I think they knew that he was going a few days ago.
I'm not actually around. I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and they are in Cleveland, OH. But we do talk pretty often by phone and this really helps all of us. Everybody's grieving, everybody breaks down in tears from time to time, so we all understand each other.
They've already started planning the memorial service and they've invited me. I will go, of course.
Thanks for asking...
